Took my elsie out for a spin today..got a couple miles..running fine..then at the lights..she died..wouldn't start then..so left it to cool for a bit..started ok then started to ride but then died again..it wouldn't take any revs..so I did the same except this time but when it started to die I grabbed the choke and it kept it ticking over..so I did this choke on and off for a bit..until it died on choke and wouldn't start at all so had to push the rest the way home..I noticed just before it died there was a small bit of black smoke out the right hand exhaust..is this crank seals..so pushed it home..just before I left it in the garage said heck il try it..start fine and revved fine..so kinda stuck a bit..hadn't been out on it since june..bad I no..don't have any real history on the engine..went pretty well since I had..I think so anyways as this is my 1st lc..any advice appreciated Dave

Probably just dirty carbs, take them off and clean with carb cleaner and blow out all the jets with compressed air, check your floats and valve as well while you have them apart, don't get the float bowls mixed up as they are sided.
good luck

Was one exhaust pipe cold when it died? Mine did this when it was fouling spark plugs.

Thanks for prompt replies..rich I didn't check to see if 1 pipe was cold..I will check though..it didn't sound quite right..the plugs I have in are b9es..I put new 1s in at start the summer..got them on eBay..should be ok..not done that much mileage ..I also will clean the carbs..dave

I always had problems with 9's unles it was thrashed to death, and really hot, have you got any standard plugs to try? bit easier that stripping carbs, easy jobs first and all that.

Sounds to me like a fuel starve issue. This could be something simple as a blocked fuel filter (if you have one on) or the the float level or float valve.

Check that the filter in the fuel tap and the column in the tank if you've checked everything else - often forgotten!

Almost definitely crap in the carbs, as I was once told (twice I think before I did as told!!) once you've cleaned tha carbs run the bike from a remote tank (that you know is clean. If all seems ok, then do the old citric acid trick if the inside of your original tank looks rusty (or if you can hear bits inside when you shake the tank). once all done then just check the carb rubbers by spraying easy start (with engine cold) around the carb area just to make sure you have no leaks and don't DONT be a tight ar5e like me and think you can get away without new parts when suspected!!! Thanks to so many member's of this forum for most of the above tips in the past
