Dump a whole tin of wd40 in it while still damp and swill around before emptying and drying with a heater.
After that always put 50ml of oil in every tank to stop future flash rust

I always use a gallon of Diesel as per my other post in another thread, swill it around and then drain, it keeps it from rusting and will cause no issues when you fill it with petrol......

Coincidence, just did my tank too, did same as above, bit of thinners and then a petrol/oil mix, haven't finished cleaning it yet, so it will do til then, need to get some paint on the outside as well, as it was quite rusty.

Ok where do we get citric acid from. . . In bulk . . Well enough to do a tank ? Anywhere that sells stuff for home brewing/wine making will sell citric acid.

Here's a couple of pics of the semi-result, haven't finished it yet. It worked a bit faster than expected and I only had it in for a few hours, probably because it looked worse than it actually was. I used vinegar to do mine, it's done a couple so far, just store it on a big container out the way somewhere (cos it stinks Bought the rusty tank of jez (jmartin) in the for sale section a few days ago. Don't have the original pics yet, but.. Gave it a swish round with oil/petrol inside after I drained it, and a quick rub over with oil on the outside, as I've got to wire brush the mounts and a bit more underneath. Got a tiny dent on the top, but nothing leaks, and should be a mint tank like he mentioned in the ad, well pleased with the results. Probably going to naff it up with a home paint job when the time comes, going to throw some paint at it before the damp weather sets in.

Does anyone use the tank sealer or am better to live with rust and filters No need to live with rust if you let vinegar do its work.

buy a plastic dustbin and mix your citric acid up in it fill the bin up enough to cover the tank and give it a soak.i am on about the bare steel one it will clean up a treat.when done swill off with clean water and wipe round the out side with a scotch brite pad .swill out the inside,i used a gas paint stripper gun to dry the tank off.to stop the flash rust either thinners plus oil/diesel sounds good also.
