Most people know what NOS means.
However, that doesn't mean that parts described as NOS are actually old, just genuine.
I have bought many 'NOS' parts, and some genuinely look like they have been in a parts bin for years, and have knocked about packaging and labels.
However I have also bought NOS parts where the packaging and labels look pristine.
What is going on?
I really don't think the quality of the 'newer' parts looks like they are fake.
I suspect that Yamaha San outsourced loads of bits to companies that are still churning them out???

HTF can something manufactured 34 yrs ago be classed as new? Maybe we need "N"BROS........"New" But Really Old Spares. Or OBNUS............Old But Never Used Spares. Some people are *issed off when they think NOS means the spares were manufactured 30 yrs ago when a different method was used on the passivating ie green. Where as now, a passivating process is used that is not green. Bit like a shed load of spares (is it a shed load of spares or is it load of spares shed off the back of a lorry?) And midlife is right! And Scoobytoo is as well, Ahh fugit!! I'm firkin confused now!

NOS - Mostly returns that have sat around for years, discoloration, scratches, and as i've found out in the past, incorrectly drilled holes . . . .
Plenty of NOS parts around with bar codes on the packaging or very suspicious new labels. Even if you leave something in a bedside table for years the labels discolor.

Maybe my interpretation of NOS is not the same as all, but I thought:
New - meant the item was new and never used from the original manufacturer. Old - meant it was for old bike, rather than the part being old. Stock - that it was available to buy.

Steve's theory of New, old stock is the correct one. It is NEW if it has never been used and fitted. It is OLD if the bike it is intend for, is no longer being manufactured and today neither is the part made. If it is STOCK. then it's available for purchase. This is a prime example of N.O.S.It has been left on shelf to gather dirt and dust. It has probably had other items thrown on top of it and been forgotten about. But it is joy to open the battered and beaten box to find the part is unfaded and damaged like the day it was made. N,OS can be barcoded because barcodes have been around since the mid 70's. I guess Yamaha started using them as stock control from the mid 80's. It all goes wrong when idiots think they can ebay it and get rich quick. Get a life, it's only a bike part!! This one has always made me laugh... Wonder why they never had offers? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-RD-125-RD125-RD125LC-throttle-cable-complete-10W-26260-00-genuine-NOS-/380792450227
