Hi, thinking of having a go myself rather than getting it powder coated, any do's or don'ts, someone locally can blast it I think, then what do I do, and use, etch primer, primer, basecoat, lacquer, 2 pack or just a PJ1 type paint?? (I use Simoniz tough a lot) Never done one before, so just weighing up the pros and cons from those more experienced, how bad can it look?? most of it will be covered up and the originals weren't that good to start off with.

I was surprised how cheap it was to get a frame sand blasted and powder coated. I took it to a place who knew what they were doing, they covered up all the threads, protected the openings, and removed the VIN plate, and also painted thin over the stamped VIN so could still be read. Turned it round in less than a week, and only cost me £75. Looked great and well happy. By the time you messed about yourself and bought all the paint etc, it seems a no brainer, I'd go to a quality powder coater every time. You can also get your other bits (swing arm, stands etc done at the same time for not much more money).

Had mine powder coated a few years ago by a place that specialised in bike bits - It has cracked on some of the corners and really needs stripping back and painting next time.

Had mine blasted then I etched primed then painted in 2k black , did this in 2005 & it still looks as new now ,, again as said hang it up & take your time 2k paint stays wet for a while & will flow around the tubes nicely ,, you can get it in cans too ,,.make sure of good ventilation & mask ,, cover up anything you dont want covererd in overspray too .

Cheers guys, had several bikes powder coated, just thought I'd try paint this time, there's someone within walking distance who can blast the frame (£20 ish), so going to get this done next week, I'll get the paint from the local supplier and have a go myself.
If I get cans, would two of them be enough? I'll practice on the subframe first, and leave the little bits until last, in case I run out.
