Went out in the sun on my pride and joy 350LC yesterday and it came back home on the recovery truck. Cruising along at 60 mph, taking it easy, temp gauge in the middle when suddenly, an almighty bang and the back wheel locked solid. Being an experienced two stroker, my left hand is always covering the clutch so at least it didn't Spit me off. Locked up solid, couldn't even kick it over....... Before even taking off my gear when we got home, it was on the ramp and exhausts off. Not the best feeling when the exhaust is full of bearing debris...... Head off and I felt sick - the left hand piston is absolutely destroyed, with bearing rollers jamming it up. With a little persuasion, I got the barrel off and saw that the small end had collapsed completely. No sign of any seizure. The right pot looked fine, so I slipped off the barrel and no damage. I then pushed out the grudge on pin and the little end fell apart, the cage has failed, but the rollers had stayed encapsulated within the rod eye. It's a real p!sser. It seems that only the bearings have failed after just 800 miles! Not good enough. The crank is wrecked as is the left hand pot and combustion chamber in the head. I am hoping that a rebore will clean it up, but there is a nick in one of the transfers which will just have to be dressed out. Last year, it did the classic TT and took the mountain course in its stride, wide open throttle for mile after mile and was totally reliable. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. Im having to sell my BSA Bantam to pay for it. If anyone has a standard bore left hand 4L0#1 barrel or a decent head please let me know. It's under a sheet in the garage for now, I can't even bear to look at it. I've had the bike nine years and yesterday considered selling it for the first time ever, but no, it will live again. Maybe not for a while, but it will definitely live to fight another Triumph bonnevile over the mountain course.

Real sorry to hear that mate but we've all been there and it really is a sickening feeling. I suggest leaving it covered up for a while, forget about it and come back when you feel better. That's the thing about these bikes, we all know that they can go bang at any time but we love them so we just keep coming back for more.

Feel For You As I Burnt A Hole In One Piston About A Month Ago, The Plus Side Is The Satisfaction You Get When Its Re-built Will Out Weigh Your Feelings Of Doom At The Moment, As The Lads On Here Said To Me, calm Down A Bit And Then Start It. Good Luck, Do It Slow and Maybe Keep The Bantam?

Think You Were Right The First Time (Wallet) Mine Needed One Piston At £39 But If I Add Up All The Receipts Its Probably About £600, These Bikes Cost Us Money but We Stick With Them So There Must Be Something About Them. The Forum Name Says It All, RD LC CRAZY!!!! Stick With It And Keep Us All Posted, Jeff

'Keep calm and carry on stroking'
I feel for you on the engine damage, but like the others say , take a step back and rebuild the bike in your own good time . If not or you sell it , the next time you here a 2 t bike you will be gutted.
Glad you had the bike under control, back in the day I had a crank sieze on a wet road , that was scary , also had a chain break one time. Both times i stayed on the back and all I wanted was a lift home .

Bad news, if the parts wernt so expensive it would be a pleasure to rebuild ,I enjoy the tinkering nearly as much as the riding these days, likes been said ride the little bike and do the lc in your own time, good advise I no ,but like me I bet you will be like a dog with a bone!

Out of idle curiosity - what make were the bearings so I can avoid them.

I'm not sure of the make of the bearings, I can't find them in my eBay history, but from now on i will only use genuine yamaha......
Thanks for all your kind words, and especially the lads who pm'd me with offers of help. It's very humbling and restores my faith in man. I am selling my bantam, so that will (hopefully) be enough to rebuild it anew.
I have done a little ringing round today and my plan is to send both barrels for rebore. If the dinks in the transfer can't be dressed out, then I will have a liner fitted to match the other side which is fine. Hopefully £200 will sort this either way. The head I will have to dress for now until one turns up, but I am considering reinstating the chamber on a Cnc miller using a ball nose cutter, watch this space.
The crank will be replaced, and again thanks to someone who has offered help beyond what I could hope for. You know who you are.
I will take some photos before taking headcoats advice and slinging it all in the naughty bin!
Cheers, Bill.
