Does anyone know the shelf life of 2 stroke, having recently bought my bike just before xmas and I'm not sure how long it was standing, although the petrol was very off!! should I drain and re-oil the tank ? also is anyone running Castrol R, apart from it smelling nice any benefits ?
Cheers

You could play safe and replace it but unless it's got contaminated with water or something else it should be fine. I recommissioned a TZR125 last summer that had been standing since 1988 and the oil looked ok, so I left it in there and it's been fine ragging it around like a loon

Yep, it looks okay, think I'll just leave it and let it run out then replace with new, thanks

What's wrong with Tesco Value 2T ?.....lol Tesco don't make oil, and it's probably far better than what we were chucking in when the bikes were new 30 years ago Granted it's not what I would buy now but I wouldn't throw it out

Why risk it for a few quid? A motor rebuild would cost a little bit more

Cheers [/quote] Not a good idea to put castrol r through the autolube pump , a cap full added to a tank full of fuel is the way to go , for smell only ... Quite honestly I Dont & wouldnt bother as Im happy with the way it runs as is

Hi all. ive worked for Mobil oil. 2 stroke has lots of different additives when manufactured, it is placed in a big tank blending at warm/hot temp. Over years they are bound to seperate. I wouldnt take the chance on poss engine damage, change it.... As for Tesco. We used to make Halfords value oil, bottle and package it,also Duckhams having to add green dye during blending... Hope this helps E

I just use whatever top level 2 stroke oil I can get cheap.
Castrol Racing 2T used to be economical, but I think they've changed the name.

In all of our highly strung 2-strokes I use Visio-Vision Fully Synthetic that Wemoto sell for £7.98 per Litre
It's red in colour (which I prefer, so it's easy to detect from other oils in the bike and also incase of gearbox contamination) and I've run it for a years now.

Well, I've just bought 5 litres of Exol Optima Racing fully synth for £30 off ebay as I've read good things about it. It meets all the specs so should be ok. Decent stuff is getting silly now, even Halford's own is nearly £12 a litre.

Shelf life of the 2 stroke oil is in most cases is 5 years from the date of manufacture. Well I hope your wrong cos a few yrs ago I was given 2 boxes of 2 stroke oil which had been stood years and I have used it in every 2 stroke I've had since and am currently using it without any known problems and it will be quite a few years before I've done both boxes in if ever. I know the oil I've got has been obsolete for years but a good brand I just can't remember what. I'll have any old oil spare if anyone doesn't trust it and wants to get rid ,I'll gladly turn it to smoke

The oil in my TZR that was stored for 16 years looks fine and the bike was kept in a dry warm environment, so has no corrosion anywhere, so as it was a full tank I thought bugger it, I'll use it.....Shane would

Hi, While we are all discussing 2 stroke oil, I thought I,d post a pic of what I found in the garage today. Been a few years since this was on the go. I dont throw much out, hence the reason my garage is a bit of a tip. steven.

I can't see it going off, especially in a sealed container.
I have found that the oil is heaps cheaper in 4L containers.

Ok, I may have made a mistake here. JASO specs were not around when super TT was first released.
