Hello,
I have a job offer in UK close to Marlow, the question is what kind of money does someone need to make to have a decent life in UK these days? I have a wife and a 2 year old kid and by decent I mean rent a house with a manshed to keep my RD and toys, have a car, health care, but not anything too fancy.
Thanks for the input!

It all depends how many times you visit the pub!

Hi Marlow is an expensive area to live, near Maidenhead in Berkshire. It borders the Thames as well. It's a nice town. As for a decent living wage ? £40,000 + maybe.

As above, Marlow is an expensive place to live/rent...and a bit prone to flooding of recent!
You be working at a nearby airport/field then Kostas?.

I'm betting you wont like the weather much either Had a good summer last year, so due another in 2019 ! Seriously though, house prices have started going mad again, with sealed bids seeming to be the new fad. Two guys I work with told me stories last week about houses selling for more than the asking price, using the sealed bid idea. A neighbour down the road from me sold her house for the asking price the day it went on the market, and every week I get estate agents cards through the door offering free valuations, so the market is moving again. Goodness knows what my kids will do when they want their own place. All this puts the cost of renting up to of course And when you say near Marlow, do you mean...Slough Dusty

Kostas, there are no olive groves with blue skies here. Methinks its better to be a poor man in paradise. If you do come, be prepared for a weather shock. It can be f***ing MISSERABLE.................for months!!!!

Yes copper it is a job at the nearby airport, and the Mrs will look for a job also, she is currently working for Novartis so she is trying to relocate to the UK branch. Does not have to be Marlow but have to be close. Kostas

Wheather will be an issue, as Steve h said there are no Blue skies there, but there is no real future with staying in Greece right now. Imagine that in 2013 I went on vacation at my favorite island only for 10 days and that was it. No other leave from work all year, so the sky is blue the beach is great but we are working our ass off and never enjoy or even notice those. I bet that if I go away I will spend more time at the beach when I come over for vacation.. So one more question, what is the retirement policy like over there?? Decent or crap like here? Thanks all Kostas

Hi I work/live next to Heathrow airport, which I'm guessing is where the job is. Not a bad area to live really, edge of London and you can be in the centre by train in under an hour. Because of that, prices for buying and renting can be high. Average 3 bed semi detached house is approx. £350,000 plus, and renting the same is around £1200 a month. Retirement age used to be 65, but that's been phased out and now you can work as long as you like !! Nhs offers free health care, but the system is under immense load and isn't as good as it used to be. Still think it's not a country to grow old in, but most don't have any option. Best thing is get a few days here and see what you think. If you do, I'll show you around the local area/London if you like. Regards
Dusty

Oh, and Slough is a large town in Berkshire, sits roughly between picturesque and historical Windsor, and Maidenhead/Marlow. Lets just say there are nicer places to live !!

Oi Kostas you can't come over here if you have a job offer & can speak English, we are only accepting scumbags who want to live off our welfare system, refuse to speak our language & want to blow things up. Sorry BTW Slough is a shit hole

Nik, I was trying to be diplomatic about Slough, but you are right, it is a proper toilet ! The positive is that "The Office" was fictionaly based there But that's the only positive I can think of at the mo Dusty

Haha, no, could never be an estate agent, I know who my father is !! Trying to be diplomatic as I don't know if there are any Sloffs, Sloughites or whatever you are called if you come from Slough, on the forum ! Funny thing is, when I go to Windsor Great Park, you can stand near the Long Walk and see Windsor, the Castle and rolling countryside, and it is beautiful. Look to the left slightly and you can see Slough, and the aircraft approaching Heathrow flying low over it, emptying the onboard toilets before they land !! Dusty

I used to go ice skating in Slough - but only because they shut down Richmond, (which was much nicer). I tried to keep my eyes closed until I got in the rink!!!
On the plus side, Spearmint Rhino is just down the road!!! - seem to recall that I ended up there on my stag night!!!
I used to live in Englefield Green and Egham. Nice places, but East Sussex is even nicer!!

Yep, apologies for the thread hijack Kostas. How long will you be over here for ? Adeph, pop in when you are next visiting, you are more than welcome. Baz, not sure I know where you mean. Anugraha is now called Saville Court, and is a hotel and conference centre. And the Sun pub was my local for a few years before it got all trendy ! Were you local too Baz or just working there ?
