Latest LC2 resto had a bit of corrosion on the top of the RH case and was wondering whether to mask and paint in situ or to remove. Onwer had mentioned it was difficult going in and out of gear but I rode it and didn't think it was too bad but as cable and adjuster marks would not align properly I thought I'd whip it off and adjust the centre changing the oil and water seals at the same time to be safe. Was a bit gobsmacked by what I found Never seen this before Steve

Very unusual- wet clutches don't normally break up.

I never seen that before either! Any sign of the cause? Can't see any reason at all. No wear on the tanks so not as if it has had a tough life. Engine only done 15k and although the case has been off before by the look of the screw heads there is nothing chewed or marked to suggest a cack handed amateur has been at it. Rubber ring was broken up so not sure if it broke up due to the bits of plates floating about or whether the ring has broke and got into the plates causing uneven pressure to break them. Furthest in rubber broke and inside 3 plates broke up. Unless it is a really cheap and nasty clutch that has been fitted. You can get plates for £20 posted on ebay. Needless to say I have not bought those but a set from Norbo Steve

Ebay- "multi mass rare clutch complete (everthing there) - so will let it run- no buy it now price" collection only buyer to supply dust pan and brush ! Returns accepted, time of blue moon during month of sundays...
Which glue would the forum suggest for that ??
Does Norbo do a clutch repair kit ?

On second look, Perhaps it was the big pieces of tissue paper/cloth that jammed it up !

Has the bike been stood for any lengh of time ? Maybe half stood in oil and half not for a year or two could cause it ?

When I started my LC2 resto' I found exactly the same, think mine had only broken two plates, the guy I bought it from rode it down the road, and let it idle for a while, sounded ok to me, was probably just as surprised as you when i took the casing off, thought it was done from dropping the clutch etc
Mine had done approx 14K miles, two owners, and stood for years aparently, (who knows?)

May be the standing bit then.
Bike came from Germany and was registered in Ireland in 2010. Know the owner has had it sitting in a collection for over a year without moving so has spent a lot of time not moving.
It may well be the original as at 15k it would not be worn out and to be honest it looks like the bolts have never been touched.

Seen this a few times, it seems to be when a bike has been standing, I wonder if the plates get stuck them when the bike starts up after the lay up they break?
I had a clutch explode on the race YPVS/LC, but I reckon that was my cackhanded starting technique!

It wasn't that bad, it must have made a noise when the plates broke up but i didn't hear it in the heat of the moment, I just gradually lost the clutch until it stopped working all together and jammed when the plates overlapped. The two outer plates had broken into little pieces and the others had cracked into large bits. One clutch basket tang had broken off and a couple had some major damage.
On the road you would know something was amiss and stop the bike for sure long before anything major happened

I still think those big bits of tissue were the cause of it.

I know folk used to put sawdust in engines when selling to quieten them down, but a packing case now that is something.....................
