Another problem, Just put the head back together with a Copper Head Gasket that came with the project I bought.
Filled the cooling system and I have a leak from the front of the Head Gasket.
Torqued up to 17.4 ft lbs, as per the Haynes.
Thinking that maybe I have to pinch up the Copper Head gasket to a higher torque. Is this right, if so any ideas what the head bolts should do up to with a copper gasket? Or does the Copper gasket need tempering first?
If i'm wrong then no probs, I have a regular gasket in the box, could just do with not having to lift the head a third time….

IMO I'd Always! use an OEM Gasket over a made by someone Copper sheet gasket. I like to use 20 lbs :-) easier to read basically

Yeh, thanks Bare, I reckon I'll whip the copper one off and stick a regular one in. I've had a search around and no one seems to be recommending the copper ones. Fitted a copper one to a BSA Twin I have and that as given me trouble, I think you have to temper them first, but the LC can have an OEM one.

heat the copper gasket up to cherry red then drop edge on into some water.air cooled rds ran copper gaskets I did this for years when I had a 400.

As Steeley says then coat it all with something like Wellseal . Works a like a charm .

Ah, thanks steely and ianr. I'd found out the hard way with the BSA that I should have tempered it but thought that maybe with the water jacket on the RD, copper might not be the best thing. I'll try it tomorrow. I'd been told to drop it in oil, not water, with the BSA.

I run one and always heat it up till it glows then drop it end on into a bucket of water then scotch bright it till it's shiny, then apply Yam-bond gasket sealer both sides, torque down working up to 20lbs.
Mark.

IF yer gonna Use goop to seal with then. It's just as simple/practical and Clearly Advantageous ..on a 4LO... to NOT use a gasket, just the sealant :-) As these run a ridiclously excessive Squish clearance.. made even worse by the OEM gasket thickness.

Just used Stag Wellseal on the copper gasket, it's very thin. It's always worked well on the Norton and that loves to leak oil given half a chance….
