I have been on the forum for a while now and seen some crackin builds, and has no doubt influenced the way I want to go with my own project, I have finally bought a 1981 rd 250 lc which I would like to restore into a hybrid.
The question I'm hoping to get help with is how I go about registering the bike in my name, I have got the old green log book and 2 old mot certificates as well as a receipt from the guy I got it off (who was not the last registered keeper). The frame number matches the log book but the engine number doesn't. Will I need any more paper work relating to the bikes history / owners etc any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Is there not a section to change all those details, as in your name and the correct engin number, and then send it off to Swansea?

My old 4l0 that I am rebuilding had a simular problam . I had and still have the old green log book and when the DVLA said it would bring out the new larger V5s and all all reg marks would be scrapped 8-10 years back? I got a little worried to. Although my bike has belong to me since 1988 it had not been taxed for 20+ years or was on the 'sorn' . I managed to speak to a real person at Swansea one day ,gave the reg and my details , she sent a new style V5 out and still did not have to sorn it either , this would have been a few years back now . How good to you get on with the guy you brought it from ? one option would be to get him just to ask for an updated V5 at his address ,get the V5 back then you go as a new owner on the V5 and you will have a new style V5 in your name. I would not worry about the engine number at this moment , you could always change that when you are in full legal ownership.
It may be worth trying to get on the phone to Swansea, you may have to try a few times to get someone interested in what you doing. Also don't tell your name until really needed and if it sounds its going to get into a minefied say the babys crying/ house on fire etc and put phone down then try next day. I had trouble one time with an USA import got into SVA testing and all sorts I quit and tried again later that week .
Have you put the reg into a DVLA search? if its still showing you should be able to sort it. I get old tractor reg marks recovered without to many probs.
Iam sure there is plenty of other help on here too.
Alex.

I bought mine back in1983 and still owed the guy £70 so he held onto the reg doc until I paid him. 2 weeks later he stole my mates lc and I told him to get stuffed I then blew it up and left it for about 25 years then applied to swansea for a v5 quoting engine and frame numbers they sent me one with no mention of sorn or nowt. I still know the guy I bought it off and he never mentioned the bike or the money again.

The previous owner will have been sent a letter to inform of the new owner, assuming DVLA still had his details on record....
