Hi Guys, I'm thinking about trying to build my first Hybrid. Trouble is 2 fold. First off is I'm not the worlds best mechanic although I have a couple of mates who are pretty handy (but I can't prevail on them to do it all). Second the special I'm thinking of would start with a YPVS 31K which is all there, and I've been offered a complete front and rear end off a 1994 ZXR400 (L model) and I'd like to ask if this would be a recognised conversion and how difficult it would prove to be. I'm looking for advice regarding how much machining work might be required and how specialised, any major stumbling blocks and general things that I would need to consider and deal with, things I probably haven't even thought of. The price for the ZXR parts is approx. £600 although I believe I know where there are front and rear ends from an RGV250 VJ22 for £750. Are these prices reasonable? which would be the best route to go? Any help would be much appreciated, I'm based in the North West. Ta.

Hi, I cant believe how much the price of alternative front and rear ends are now. Some conversions need stem swaps, some only need a spacer under the bottom bearing. Rear ends are normally a bit more work though depending on what you get. There will be machining costs to add on, both at the pivot and possibly the sprocket carrier, possibly new sprockets to correct ratios or pitch or chain run. Possibly new bearings in swingarm/suspension linkages, brake caliper rebuilds, new oil-springs/seals in forks, plus lots of little things like mounting clocks to new yokes, handlebar fitment if you want higher bars, longer cables/brake lines etc etc. Don't want to sound negative, these are issues I have come across in the past and didn't necessarily consider at the time. My Yamasaki has a KR1 front end and rear end. I bought it already done although tatty. The frame has to be modded for the suspension bottom knuckle to mount to. The swinger has to be machined down at the pivot to fit in the frame. The yokes appear to have had a stem swap and a spacer fitted. I had to get brackets welded on for the Lc clocks I'm using, plus I had to buy some risers and drill the top yoke for them so I could use Renthalls. Some cables will now not be long enough so I've got to source alternatives. I rebuilt the forks and polished the lowers myself, new oil etc, and I have just had the front calipers rebuilt/powdercoated, with new pads which was £200 alone ! If you check out the rebuilds section, there are loads of threads with suspension swaps, so you can see what can be done and how difficult it is. Lots of guys here have done them, and I'm sure you'll get help when you need it, but be sure that purchasing the big bits isn't the end of the spending !! Regards Dusty

Hi Just to add, the Zxr conversion has been done by a member on here. There are pictures somewhere, probably in the rebuild section. There are also details on mix and matching yokes with different/cheaper forks and wheels. Do a search as there is lots of info. Finally, give Nigel a ring at NK Racing. I have found him really helpful in the past and he has done lots of conversions so if anyone knows, he does !
