There is a backlash mesh number engraved on the back of each of the gears. These two numbers have to be 155 +/- 1 when added together.
I've heard it said that it doesn't matter but that is the Yamaha spec so I'd go with that for safety sake.
If you change just the basket (a billet basket would be a good idea) onto your old gear then you wouldn't need to source another primary gear.

I have a matched set if you need one, the basket needs the edges filing a bit but other than that is all good to go.

Found this, should help work out the gears you need.

Found this, should help work out the gears you need. Unfornutnately that is wrong. There was a discussion on another forum where it was deemed that the Yamaha manual was wrong due to the common backlash numbers in use. The general consensus was that it would be virtually impossible to acheive the number quoted by Yamaha with the numbered baskets/primarys available. I've never seen primarys numbered as low as 60's. 80's - 90's are common. 155 +/- 1 has been the accepted rule...

What model are we referring to? The chart shown by ulsta is the same one as shown in the Genuine Yamaha workshop manual I have for the 4L1/4lO models but the Genuine manual for the LC2 shows the backlash tolerance as listed as 155+/-1.

YPVS and LC clutch baskets are exactly the same part, as are the primary gears.
