just had the lc running with a spare battery it's bigger so can't fit it to the bike.was gunna take it for a test spin but it was just goin dark so needed lights but would'nt work without the battery. am i wrong in saying the lights should still work without the battery?? not as good i know but i should have had something. so does this also mean that my battery ain't gunna be gettin any charge? bike starts fine without the battery tho thats the thing. can i do a test for charge to the battery?

Don't run the bike without the battery in circuit as you will damage the reg/rec unit if you haven't done so already.

Not sure how long. The thing I would do is get the correct fully charged battery for it and connect it up and put a voltmeter across the terminals and with the engine running above 2000rpm you should be getting 14.5 volts plus or minus 0.5volts. If not you may have damaged the reg/rec unit or stator windings.

As said.. check voltage across battery when running. Then check resistance values as specified by the manual across the twrminals of the rectifier.. check all block connectors in the charging circuit for signs of overheating due to corrosion in the terminals.. then proceed to check resistance across the coils of the stator also specified in the manual.. also check output from stator across all three terminals.. one will not check it.. more than likely the rectifier.. was working on a vfr the other day that had the arse end of the loom wired up so the charging circuit was runningto a dead end.. and charging nothing.. some people should not be left alone with tools lol

The reg / rec should be OK, so long as it was well mounted, as it will have had to dump the entire alternator output as heat.
If running with the battery disconnected broke them, then this would happen if the main fuse blew. Not a great design if blowing a fuse cost you a new r/r
