does anyone know the easiest way to get the pump adjustment plate to stop at its fully out position so i can measure the gap between the plate and the raised boss on the pulley ? i've been trying to do it how the haynes manual says and stop the engine when adjustment plate is fully open , but i can't get it to stop in fully out position , HELP !

Take the plugs out and "inch" the engine with the kickstarter until the pump is in the correct position.

I usually do it with my hand over the kill switch with the engine ticking over while knelt down watching the adjust plate. It does take a while to make sure the adjust plate is right out and I usually check it several times to make sure the clearance is within spec.

Roofmonster's method is the best - to correctly set the stroke you MUST make sure that the piston is at the top of its stroke.
