I'll start with the fact I cant work a computer(too old) took me hours to set this up so unless someone replys I wont know if it works.i have an rd 350 lc 1980 that's been in boxes since I stripped it 31 years ago. I would like some(quite a lot) of friendly advice on rebuilding it from scratch

No worries dude, welcome in. If you hit the refresh button you will see any replies a lot quicker, especially useful if you are having a one to one with some one.

First thing is I hope you are restoring it for yourself as you will more likely spend 2-3 times what it will actually be worth when finished! Secondly, you are in the right place for parts. Many new parts are still available but there are numerous ebay sellers charging extortionate rates for bits you can still get from a dealer. As long as you stripped a complete bike at least you should have all the parts. Hopefully the tank is not rotten. First thing is to sort all the parts into what needs powdercoating and what needs plating and go from there. Good luck and be sure to post up plenty of pics, we like pics

I have 2 engines one is stamped 4lo its in a million pieces but is original engine with knackered crank. the other is a 4l1 still in one piece is it a 250 bottom end? whats the diff and can I use one as a template to copy while building original

4L1 is a 250 engine but may have been converted to a 350. What does it say on the side of the barrels?

no barrels only a bottom end that I bought along with other bits and pieces 30 year ago. that's why i'm now looking at parts and wondering what they are because ive not looked at it for at least 28 years and at 49 the brain don't work to good

Many of the 250 and 350 parts are the same, including the bottom end.

If the 4L0 cases match the frame number, I would use them as a bike with matching engine and frame numbers will always be seen as original so will be worth more.

Update your profile, or at least state where you live as there may be a kind local soul who will offer to help.

Barrels will be 54mm bore (nominal) for the 250 and 64mm bore (nominal) for the 350. Will also say on them 4L1 and 4LO respectively as well as stating the cc for the 2 sides combined.

head is all chipped when rings broke can these be repaired If there are no 'proud' areas should work fine. My engine has this kind of damage on the R/H side, runs great.

head is all chipped when rings broke can these be repaired Detonation marks are fairly common in heads. Always seems to be the RHS for some reason. Should'nt effect bike performance greatly - but a picture on here would help assess it.

Calum, you are not an idiot if you struggle with computers. I have met quite a few people who are idiots, and they did nothing else but computers! Good luck with the jigsaw, loads of info off knowledgeable folks on here.

as said if the 350 bottom end numbers match then would be foolish to not try and rebuild with that one at any cost.
if it's a 1980 and you have had it 31 years then would be a rare low owner bike.
good to see another scottish lc getting rebuilt
