Does anyone know if this can be done? When I put the top end back together I used some non standard seals that I got from the seal shop, however they are unable to seal properly and I am getting a sharp exhaust cracking note coming out from between the cylinders.
I don't really want to pull the cylinders off again as I just spent $72 on a headgasket and have only ridden it to work and back once.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Sam
PS. It's a 31K engine in a F2

No has to come apart, you can't get to the middle seals without splitting the barrels to get the PV's apart, and the seals off/on. head gasket 'might' be ok if done quickly enough.

Yeah it's a bit of a pain as I'm in New Zealand and Yamaha have to get the head gasket in from Australia which takes a week or so.

Sam, I think it may be possible without removing barrels, the gap left when you remove the PV joining piece may be enough. Give it a try, nothing to lose. Let us know if you manage it, good luck.

I have ordered some new seals and a new gasket today. I'll try on the weekend to see if I can get the seals past the joining peice. It may even be a case of leaving the seal housings in and just sliding the seals past the gap.
It may be possible, just rather fiddly, but probably less work and quicker than removing an entire barrel.
Will let everyone know the results after.

Defineatly worth trying before removing the head and barrels. I'm certain I've done this on my LC2 when I first got it but was a long time ago. I seem to remember when you remove the centre joint there is a gap between the ends of the two powervalves that you can just get the seals past.

Defo not enough room, I would change the large "O" ring around the bush as well - slight smear of high temp sealer around the "O" ring to ensure a good seal. Also make sure bushes aren't worn too

Remember cutting an allen key down years ago and changing them in place. To be honest was a nightmare and would probably be as easy taking the top end off.
Yes I managed it, no it did not sort it as has been said the bushes are usually worn which is why the old seals blew.
Strip it and do it properly.

The reason the old ones are leaking is that when I redid the topend just before, when I was cleaning up all the old gear in kerosine, the old seals sort of went all funny so I just got some seals around the right size from a seal shop. They didn't look anything like the Yamaha seals, but I thought they'd be alright.
They arn't alright as it's rather noisy up the front now and it leaks out smoke so I need to change them for some proper seals.
Once I do that it'll be sweet as I reckon.

Yes very amusing.
I've decided to remove the old seals in-situ as an exercise and then assess to see if I am going to put the new ones in the same way. I'm used to doing fiddly work as I'm an aircraft engineer.
Thanks for your help everyone!

Getting the old ones out in situ is probably the hard bit....

Sam, if the gap is too small to get the seal through without damaging it, removing the RH side bush will give you a little more room. Keep the PV in the fully open position, so it cannot scrape the pistons. As m1ke says getting the old ones out may be tricky, try using a safety pin (like getting a winkle out of its shell).

I'm used to doing fiddly work as I'm an aircraft engineer. Thanks for your help everyone! f**ks sake if you are an aircraft engineer then the humble LC engine will be a piece of piss !!! They arn't too bad, but you've got to remember that working on aircraft, and working on motorcycles are too completly different things. At work you have extensive tools, perfectly laid out clean working environment, plenty of time to do the job, very comprehensive manuals and lots of people to talk to about the job and you have people checking your work, large budget for spares and repairs etc. When you are working on your motorbike it's usually in your own cold messy cramped workshop because you have so many bikes and pushbikes in it, you are trying to avoid spending any much money because you need to pay off the mortgage, you're using some vague haynes manual at best, theres noone to check your work, and there's noone to ask if your unsure, apart from the internet. Just because you work on aircraft doesn't mean that you are perfect at doing any type of engineering, but it does help
