Don't put all your money in to doing a fast bike put what you have in to suspension and what you have lest go for speed the best handling bike wins races . You need speed of course and you will need all you can get but if you cant use it theirs no point in having it .

I'm currently rebuilding one to YPM spec (power under YPM regs is actually a bit restricted compared with what you could get out of them, which should keep it fairly reliable) - there is a good build guide on the YPM site.
They seem relatively heavy for a 2 stroke, so remove anything that isn't needed to make it go - there is loads of surplus weight on them.
Triumph TT600 calipers bolt straight on and make a massive difference to the brakes.
If you are going for YPM spec you don't need to spend a lot on tuning - try different exhausts if possible - loads of power to be found there (I found 10hp with no other mods).
And like Norbo says - suspension needs a bit of work as its very soft (or just get used to it).

I recently swapped my LC forks for TZR 2ma ones and then put TZR125rr wheels on, I saved over 10kg in unsprung weight from the heavy LC wheels and rear drum brake, its made a huge difference. When I'm modifying a bike all my money goes into suspension and light wheels, after that it goes on the engine, but only once the suspension and weight has been tackled.

paulh. mmm what calipers exactly.year? want to keep it usable on the road for setting up.and keep lights for ease of use. want it to handle .but dont want to fit for example fzr front an rear end if it will do wierd things to handling.i can build/make fabricate most things so not a problem there.

Mine are off a 2002 TT600, - but from the YPM regs the following should all bolt straight on
FZR400 3TJ, TZR250 3MA, TZR250 3XV, R1-Z 250, Triumph TT600 and 595 series (all with 83mm bolt spacing)

want to surprise a few modern bikes is the plan I think you'll struggle with that. The valve is a 30yr old bike, anything modern designed to go round corners quickly will probably be faster everywhere. I've been on the track with my LC and round tight bends I could nip up the inside of a few people but to be honest thats more about who's riding the bike than anything else. I had my arse kicked by a bloke on an RGV and I reckon I would be faster than him if we were on equal bikes, so the obvious fact is his bike was faster and handled better than mine. The lads I know on CBR600RR's leave me for dead. At legal-ish speeds on the roads I keep up with no real problems, but where I can see they're not really trying too much I'm wrestling with a bendy frame and forks (at least until I put the TZR forks on I was anyway). I obviously do a bit better round town and round really tight country single lane roads, in fact on those roads most litre sportsbikes struggle because of the way they deliver power and the riding position. You'll have a lot of fun and I'm keen to see the results, but unless you do some very impressive tuning then I don't think you'll be worrying too many modern 600's. In fact any of the modern 600's will piss all over a tuned RD500, let alone a 350 valve.

Agree with that - took mine to Lydden (not a power track) and struggled against bikes I could pass on my TZR250. Its a lot of fun, but you just get blown away out of corners. and on the straights.

On something like a GSXR1000 you can't hammer it, not unless you're a BSB level riding god and even then it will bite you if you're not carefull with the throttle. 70mph on my LC feels like 160mph on a GSXR1000, and its way more fun. And I'm a lot less likely to lose my license or put myself through the side of a house.

They have got different bolt spacing.
