Hi had my bike a while now, and done it up over the past few years, cuple of weeks ago, got a dating letter and got the bike MOT'd.
I know I have to get insurance on the frame number (suggestions please. Bikesure will do it for one), but what do I do after that? Bought the bike off ebay, and have no other documents, will I have to take it to a DVLA inspection place to have it checked out??
Thanks

Hi. You'll probably need to fill out a V62. I downloaded one off the DVLA web site, filled it in & they sent me an appointment for the local DVLA office to have it inspected, I did send some supporting detail & photos but I really believe they just binned it as the reply seemed to overlook it all, suppose it could have been pictures & copies of anything really. It actually took longer for her to get on her dayglo jacket & construction site style hard hat, than to inspect the bike. I unload the bike from the van, she looks at colour, miles, frame & engine number....that's it. I spend some time explaining that the bike is completely standard but has at some point been rebuild using the frame/engine she see's now & all parts match the type of bike she see's....none of this is noted she just wants to make sure it's a motorbike & not the Amoco Cadiz (one for us older readers). However she does suggest that the Reg number stands a good chance of being retained, but it's up to DVLA Swansea not her.hopefully no Q plate here. Now waiting now for DVLA to get the info & act on it.
Good luck & I'd be quick as they are shutting all the DVLA offices soon & this process will be right PITA from then on.

You are now going to require it to de notified to the HMRC under the new Nova scheme, this you may struggle with as they now need to be informed within 14 days of the bike comming into the country, although yours is already here. DVLA are unable to regester a vehicle without it. You wil need to get a form V55/5 to regester the bike sent to you through direct.gov.uk, the last thing to get is insurance a day or 2 b4 you are going to regester it, they should not need to see it.

I would not mention the word "import" to DVLA
Say you bought it from a UK source with no paperwork years ago as a project and would like to register it. Hopefully you can get round the import duty thing that way.

I'm trying to register 2 bikes at the moment and yes it is a pain. DVLA don't want to know without a nova being completed with HMRC. They try to get you to do it online but you can't. If it's not 'just' been imported you need a Nova 1 form, which you can't download. Fill it in with some impossible to answer questions like which port did the bike arrive at, then send it off to somewhere in Dover and wait forever cos they are that busy and clueless.
DVLA wont accept a dating letter from a club or other organisation. It has to come from the manufacturer. I spoke to Suzuki about it, they said no problem. Send us £95 and wait 50 days!
That's just my experience, but it's probably different everytime you do it.

It must be possible because there will be bikes bought in the UK that were never registered. Surely they can now be registered. Biggest problem will be getting someone from DVLA that gives a shit which will be even more difficult when the local offices close. Steve

I signed up for the Nova system and started making screen shots to do a post to help people here, but my god is it long winded. Whoever wrote that system needs shooting. Not to mention the wording is heavily biased towards dealers. The ridiculous thing is that it currently only works for EU vehicles, which used ones would have already had VAT paid. So this seems to be aimed at crooked dealers avoiding the VAT on new cars, as you can ask the dealer to supply it without VAT. “Criminal gangs abused the old system in the past by bringing vehicles into the UK and registering them with the DVLA without accounting for VAT. That stops today" www.mynewsdesk.com/uk/hm-revenue-customs-hmrc/pressreleases/new-checks-to-tackle-vat-car-crime-855772I also note that they had a consultation with motoring organizations before introducing it, but none of those included any classic vehicle groups.

For the OP 11. Vehicles brought into the UK in parts Some customers may bring a vehicle ( particularly a motorcycle) into the UK as parts, before restoration. If someone buys parts from outside the UK but from within the EU, for example from the Netherlands, then takes a number of years to restore the vehicle to something that is road worthy, there will be no VAT due on the vehicle. However, for the vehicle to be registered by the DVLA the customer must provide the vehicle details to HMRC by completing a paper form ‘ VAT NOVA1’ to the best of their ability and include copies of the receipts of the parts purchased to prove that the vehicle is a restoration. customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageLibrary_ShowContent&propertyType=document&id=HMCE_PROD1_032698
