…doesn't feel like it wants to go in any further. It's a tapered thread so I guess it's ok?

Yes it is a taper thread on the F2 sender.
31k was straight

taper on the thread so they saved on a sealing washer. got a landrover sender for my 350 lc the original one broke.soldered a spade connector on it and it works a treat. 3.30 plus free p@p RST LANDROVERS.

I have 31k my temp sender with spade fitting should be 5R2-83591-00 i found a superseeded part while googleing 17W-83591-00 if this is any use to anyone going up in price £30.52 plus vat now, works fine only difference is the head is a little smaller. Attachment Deleted

A bit of ptfe tape on the sensor before installation does no harm.
