Hi, I have a 250lc in a 350 frame on a Q plate, I have purchased a 350 motor of what I believe to be the same year, How do I go about proving the years of the frame and engine and how do I re-register it?

send the frame number to Paul dawking on this forum he is a DVLA dating officer for a small fee he will fined the date your bike was made and give you a certificate then using that you can apply for a year related plate and V5

I'd very much doubt any vehicle can be given an age related reg after been on a Q reg.
But i stand to be corrected.

I was told by the DVLA in Preston that you can produce a dating certificate at anytime on a Q plate and get it reregistered.

IF you can re-register the bike it will first have to be built, insured (on the frame number) & MOT'ed. It will also almost definitely have to be inspected by a DVLA officer. OEB

I always thought this was a grey area.
A lot of us have built bikes and had them registered on age related plates but we have presented them as a complete bike. The point of a Q was that the age could not be determined or that it was built from parts of different ages.
If you were honest and said the frame was a certain age but everything else is non dated I think you would be stuffed. I thought you could not remove a Q but if you can get it done good on you.
As long as there is nothing in the notes section of the V5 as it states any information on there cannot be removed so if it says it was built from parts that would have to stay.

just done this on a Q plate CRM250 for a mate, Mk2 he picked up for £600 and now worth about double, he also could not get it insured as a Q plate with the company he used, so I rode it home for him,. If it has a few main components changed like suspention or engine, you might not be able to get it done. If its standard just a dating certificate (they stipulated it must come from the manufacter, Honda in this case charged about £35) would be all you need. His bike was desposed of from the Army in 2000 so was just regestered and sold. If you have a special with YPVS engin and RGV suspention you might not be able to do it, some people have had biker Q plated at a later date because of this as its classed as a modification, they are getting alot stricter on this now. Make it as standard as possible then do it if you can. He also did not have to have the bike inspecter. Go along to your local DVLA office (until they all get shut soon) and ask what they require to do it, but remember this, WHATEVER IS DONE TO IT, IF THEY DONT WANT TO LOOK AT IT, IT IS TOTALY STANDARD AND HAS NO MODIFICATIONS. Dont mention the year of the engine just incase either, just change it on the V5 b4 or when you give them the details, but check on this to see what Paul thinks as might be better to do the engine number change first.

Then all you should need is a dating certificate and they shouldn't want to see the bike. You will still need to speak to someone at your local office to see if they would only take one from Yamaha or other places, don't just call the DVLA help line, although the should all accepts the same thing, they don't! In some cases people just don't know that you can get a dating letter, or can't be bothered and just accept the Q plate.
