The fact that the carbs are stamped 4L0-01 means they are the updated version.
The 4L0-01 carbs should have a 220 main jet, this was one of the updates.

Just set my float heights,.set oil pump new plugs carbs balanced fresh petrol in the awld girl and still running crap the bike splutters from 2000rmp till 5000ish rmp like when you first sart it up and its cold, even when warm, then at 5000ish it kicks in wheel in air below 5000ish is crap spluttery as hell feel like a plugs off but there ok!! any ideas 22.5 pilots 190 mains allspeeds, standard air box on stripping carbs seems like I have the same float bowl on both sides (they both have a jet in) will this cause the problem? and should both my slides have cut outs in ? as only the choke one has a cut out Any help would be good thanks Alan

Non choke side with a choke side bowl fitted should be fine as it has nowhere to go.
Would think both slides should be the same which may be your problem

if you get really stuck, send me your carbs and I'll check them over and set them up etc, including ultrasonic clean them for you, I've done a few sets for some people on here, not had any complaints yet.......probably just "hexed" myself with that comment !!
I remove the brass balls and clean the air correction circuit out and put new brass balls in, its generally that which causes various faults like what you have described, its very hard to clean that circuit and jet without taking the brass balls out as there is no direct access to the jet from any other way

Sometimes its just worn internal components that cause the problems. I have put carb kits in two different RDs lately and what an unbelievable difference it made. Cost about £25 per kit / carb but money well spent.
Crap running on both bikes before the kits went in - they both run great now.
Then balance them up up using the lolly stick method.

Will order some carb repair kits whats the best ones ?? Also I seem to remember back in the 80s bike seemed to do this when they had been ported!! (splutter low down then take off higher up the rev range) anyone had carbs set up for ported barrels ? engine had a full rebuild when I got it so dont really want to strip it down to check if I can help it.
cheers Alan

When you strip them to fit the new bits, remove the emulsion tube and give the tube and the carb body a good clean. And don't forget to set the float heights after you put the new float valves in

Up date just put the carbs back on thought what the hell will vapour blast them so a full strip down and in the machine then blow out with compressor fitted them back on expecting the worst however fired straight up and to my suprise spluttering has gone at low revs the bike rides much better it still hesitates from 4k to 5k but still usable so i think its just a case of fine tuning and a couple of plug chops happy days
