I have read a few posts on this so thought I would post up my own recent experience:
Yamaha DT125LC, bought last July with the Swiss documentation.
Rebuilt over the winter (see my thread) and ready for MOT test in February.
I was told that to register it, all I needed was an MOT, insurance and a dating certificate.
Got it all including a dating cert from Paul (mr helpful) Dawkins on here.
Presented it at the DVLA in Manchester, but was told that they no longer accept Dating certs, unless accompanied by a letter from Yamaha, stating either the date of first registration, or that they cannot date it.
Spoke to Yamaha, told it was £55 for this.
Spoke to Paul, who mailed me a letter explaining that the dating certificate is sufficient, and went back to DVLA, who again sent me packing.
So I contacted the seller who had promised to pay the duty originally, but had never got round to it, and he came up trumps for me - customs and excise form 386 arrives three weeks later, dated 02/04/13. (This C&E 386 shows duty has been paid)
Back to the DVLA (Third time lucky?) on Friday 19/04/13. As always, queued for 45 mins:
The very unhelpful lady then enjoyed telling me that C&E 386 is no longer valid from Monday 15/04/13 and that the bike has to be registered online on the new NOVA system!!
Give me strength!
There was no talking to her, possibly the most unhelpful person I have met.
Gave me a slip of paper, with a contact number for HMRC, so I rang them from outside the building.
"This is the wrong department - I will give you the number for the right one"
But its Friday afternoon and its mega busy so gave up after an hour of trying.
So, well pissed off, I consider breaking it, despite all the work I have done and it being a true minter.
Saturday, scanning ebay, I see a D plate DT125LC frame with log book finishing saturday night. After half a case of Stella CIDRE I decide to bid, and win it for £103, - that'll do.
Drive 200 mile round trip the day after and collect it, but start thinking on my way back:
I have spent all this time, effort and money on mine, and I have to do it all again? My frame is mint with all vin tags, straight and powder coated, what a pisser.
So I decide to have another crack at the HMRC helpline on the Monday.
Really really helpful guy listens to me and says, wait for it.....
"Of course your C&E 386 is valid, it pre-dates the NOVA system!!!!
He even gives me a number to pass on, in case the DVLA dispute it.
Big up to the DVLA!!
So, Monday 22/04/13 I go back to the DVLA armed and ready. No queue, strange?
United are playing so its heaving....
Three desks vacant: The really unhelpful bitch from hell, and two guys, so I pick the chap furthest away from the bitch:
"I want to register my bike, here is everything you need"
"I'm sorry sir, the C&E 386 is now invalid"
I am just fumbling for the helpline number when his colleague looks over and says:
Wait for it:
You know it don't you?
"Of course its valid, it pre dates the NOVA system"
Bang, bang, bang, go sit over there and they will sort it out.
Three days later, a tax disc turns up, and yesterday the registration document, showing the correct date of original registration (06/06/85)
And thats it, thats exactly what happened, and my DT is now road legal.
Anyone want, or know anyone who does, a 1986 HPi clear DT125LC frame with log book...........?!!
