i feel so stupid.... you know how it is when you fiddle with something that was ok in the first place....
thought i'd synch the carbs, so proceedure is get it to tick over on one cylinder, then the other, then connect both spark plugs and reduce throttle stop screws equidistantly to get correct idle speed....
cut a long story short in the middle of adjusting, engine revs to red line, turn ignition off, still redlining, disconnect plug leads, still revving to red line.............how the fcuk am i gonna stop engine, its running out of control at maximum revs with ignition off and plug caps removed... its gonna blow itself up.... turn petrol off and it runs out of petrol and stops after what seems an age but is probably 45-60 seconds or so.
so after running at maximum revs in neutral for about a minute, the engine seems a bit rattley now.
what damage do you think iv'e done..... wish i'd left well alone, it was ok before i fiddled with it.... i've also posted this on the aircooled forum for maximum coverage.
thanks in anticipation.

I've never heard of people syncing carbs with the engine running and personally I wouldn't do it. Damage wise you've probably scored the barrels due to lack of oil, either run it as is or whip an exhaust off and take a look through the port.

thanks for replys.... took it for a ride today, and it runs ok.... sounds a bit rattleier, but that may be my imagination.... as for synching the carbs one pot at a time, thats the proceedure on the rd400, so i assumed it would be the same on the lc..... however on checking the workshop manual, i note that this is not the case on the lc, so i'll re-synch the carbs as per the workshop manual in future...... i should have checked the manual first...... idiot
cheers

Oooh bet that was scary! I've heard of the aircooled points bikes running backwards but not a CDI one. Live and learn I guess. As already said, you initially sync these carbs statically without the engine running. Usual method is to slacken off the cable adjusters and use a drill bit under each slide in turn to get the idle screws matched. Then adjust the cables so both carbs open at the same time and equally. With the bike running, adjust each idle screw by the SAME AMOUNT to get the correct idle speed. Then re-adjust the oil pump. Good luck
