Latest project is a DT125LC ypvs 35E Swiss import. 21bhp full power with working powervalve. Bought unseen and been stood ten years. Tried to get it running but it just bogs down then dies with a backfire. New battery, plug and fuel but it's not having it even after cleaning carb out. Every thing works but not the lights only brake and parking but switch is goosed so try that first. Waiting on paperwork coming from seller to begin registration process. Completely standard but for the DEP tail pipe I fitted. Photos make it look better than it is Any info would be appreciated as everything I have relates to uk model. Suggestions to get it going welcome. Will update as I go along.

Evidence is pointing to a faulty CDI - anyone have one to try?

Hi If its been stood for 10 years with fuel in it , my guess is the problem lies in the carb still. No matter how well you think you clean it they never seem to be right the first few times ,I've ended up buying second hand ones in the past ,

Hi Delbert It fires first kick and almost ticks over Seller swears he had it running before I had it collected I think it's ignition as it won't rev on the throttle and backfires Seller reckons cdi - wish he'd said that before I bought it

unfortunatly most sellers will tell you what you want to hear , I would guess he did have it running , (just not properly) ,, Im afraid with these old bikes that have been sat around for years you will have these problems ,It could well be electrical , did the fuel smell stale ? was it all gummy like varnish in the carb ? if so you will need to flush the tank and fuel tap also . Not trying to teach you to suck eggs like, but if any of the above applied i would still go with fuel probs . My 350lc had stood untouched for over 10 years and it started 1st kick with no choke and idled , that was about it though , i ended up getting s/h carbs for that Good luck and keep us posted

Tank and carb as clean as a whistle. Tried a 250LC carb as a comparison - still the same. New fuel in tank, flowing correctly. Had flywheel off - all looks good - key not sheared and rest is unadjustable. Wish I had a cdi to try....

Right then chaps. I have just won a CDI off the 'bay and it should be here in a couple of days. Before I fit it, what should I be looking for? Is there a reason the old one failed? They are in short supply so I dont really want to be looking for another... All the other electrics work, so I assume the earths are all ok, and the bike does run to a point so again assume that its not a dodgy live earthing out, or it would not work at all? Thoughts?

my 10p worth , spray carb cleaner in the carb on the bike , then repeat a few times bill . this has helped me in the past on my "barn finds, it was running before it was stored , old chesnut" the carb cleaner help melt the gum in the carbs little air ways should help as bike will run on carb cleaner , brakecleaner or if you can get some acetone

Ebay CDI (known working) fitted...............still the same :-( What do we think boys? It runs but feels like the timing is out - stinks of fuel, lazy, and the exhaust downpipe is red hot. Timing is fixed though. Whats left to try - pickup coil? Ignition coil (but it s sparking? Lets have a think chaps or shall I break it!!!! Burn it?

A hint for when you come to register it. DON'T use the Swiss log book as the DVLA will ask for evidence that import duty has been paid as Switzerland isn't in the EU and you probably won't have it. Go on Ebay and get a dating certificate instead for £20 and use that. Insure it against the frame number (most ins co's will do this for a short period), get it mot'd on the frame number and take the lot to your local VRO. A mate of mine has just been through the same process with his Swiss import RD125LC. Good luck

That's a good tip thanks As soon as its running I'll get it tested and make a start Do you have an eBay link to the dating cert supplier?

If the exhaust is red hot the timing is a mile out . Not the same bike, but I do know that two different flywheels/pickups were fitted to DT175MX , if you have the wrong flywheel for your ignition it throws the timing miles out . Suggest you check partnumbers of flywheel , pickup , stator , CDI etc.
Or get a dial gauge and mark TDC on the flywheel and get a timing light on it .
You seem to have tried everything else .

We have been working on the bike since 4 o'clock this afternoon(6 hours..) and checked / double checked the ohms values and every single one is perfect! Not just within tolerance, spot on what they should be. The only thing I cant check of course is the CDI, but a big fat healthy spark, and trying another leads me to think its not that. Carb has been on and off and even tried one off a 350 YPVS but no difference. Air box clear, exhaust is now off and that is also clear. Reed valve assembly looks as it should all reeds closed. YPVS works and hasn't collapsed blocking the exhaust port. The stator is fixed, not slotted so the timing can't be altered (twisted crank - not generally the case on a single??) Shoved it up and down the street till we passed out.........
But it still won't run.
Crank seals......Hmmmmmm..... could be? Whats the acid test? Not easy to check with powder when it doesn't run!!! If the crank seals have gone, and its drawing in air it would run weak and therefore hot. Do I strip it, change em and hope it cures it or .....burn it!!!

If the exhaust is glowing that hot it would suggest an air leak !! Left hand crank seal poss ??, can you run it and spray a bit of wd40 around the joints , that should pick it out

I'm going for an air leak boys. Marked TDC but it won't run long enough to get timing light on it. Been sorting out the garage so this winter i'll rebuild it all.
