Hi guys, got my bike back from MOT on Saturday morning,it only failed on fork seals. (although I did get them to put new tyres on before the test) When I collected the bike I was told they had to carry out some work on the forks which meant applying chemical metal to them, the guy that did the work was not there to speak to and I dealt with his mate who didn't seem to know an awful lot about the work carried out so I paid the bill and went for a ride. Bike is fine, but what is the chemical metal process all about? Pardon my ignorance, but what is it? cheers

chemical metal is a paste in a tube that drys to form a kind of metal.tho y they would need to use it on your forks is beyond me.ive heard of people filling pits in the forks with this, then smoothing down afterwards, but it aint a quick fix for an mot tester to be doing, and they certainly shdnt be doin it on yr forks without consulting you.but maybe they used it for something else, but i wdnt be happy personally if my bike had been 'operated' on without my consent.speshly if i found out they had been slapping liquid metal about.

just re read your post, are you saying they used chemical metal AND failed your bike? or it failed, and then they fixed it with chemical metal?

Well I had a phone call to say it had failed on fork seals, fair enough. Then when I rang back next day to see if they'd done the seals I was told that it would be ready tomorrow so I went next day to collect the bike and was told that when they stripped it to do the seals, that's when they discovered that the forks were in a bad state so they'd used liquid metal to sort them out. To fit 2 new tyres, new chain and sprockets, mot and the fork work came to £150.

i take it you supplied tyres and sprockets for that price.only thing i can think is that the fork legs have been that butchered the seals wdnt seal.maybe they filled pits/scores in with it.if its taken a couple of days to get right, then hopefully they did a proper job of it.if they just smeared it everywhere then plonked the seal in and let it set, there may be more butchery to come when it needs seals in the future.

Yeah I supplied tyres and chain kit (£300). The bike seems fine I just hadn't heard of liquid metal or its uses before. Thankyou for your time,I've absolutely no intention of getting rid of the bike so maybe I'll have a fork seal update in the future. Thanks again.

no probs dude.sometimes comes in a single tube, sometimes as 2 tubes you have to mix.halfords sell it.like i say,if theyve done a proper job, there will be no reason to worry.they took their time, some places may have jammed it in n let you have it the same day.
