Hi, I own a 1982 RD 350 LC and would like to know how much play there should be between the caliper and the hanger as i have just been told it is an mot failure as is! I have had the bike for nearly 10 years and the last 2 it has been off the road whilst mods and repairs have been done. I have had the calipers polished along with new pistons and seals but i don't see how having this done would affect it to become an mot failure (never failed before). Any advice would be gratefully received.

Sounds a bit odd to me if it stops the bike on the masheen used to test it play should be irelivent. I would put a match stick in the pin hole between the caliper and the hanger to stop it ratteling and take it back and get your pass just make sure you put loads og gress around it and cover it with the rubber seals. The ones on my lc rattle and it passes every year.

if they fail it again, take it somewhere else when it passes report the other station! we have a few around here like that which fail things so people without mechanical knowledge give in and let the garage fix the problem. Just there why of making easy money. My sisters got a ford (i know she'll get over it lol) the garage failed it because underneath the apparently was a rust hole most of the way down the sill he could get his hand in.The guy said he'd do it for £150 and underseal it so it doesnt happen again. I felt like a twit cos i gave the car a good once over before it went in.She came back and told me so i took another look, no hole, no rust even ,just nice underseal i'd put on the year before. Along with a friend (who's a brick sh*te house) we drove too the garage and straight onto their 4 poster ramp and started too raise the car. The guy came running over angry and shouting! my friend slapped the fail ticket onto the guys chest as he got too us and demanded he showed us where the f***ing rust hole is! or we'd phone the ministry and report him. Of course the guy couldnt! we didnt actually have the ministies phone number so my mum's number was called where my sister answered and just went along with it. We got the money for the mot back and the service he carried out before hand then went home and phoned the really ministry. Cant let people like this rip of women, well unfair. He got checked overed and fined as there were several complaints alredy being looked into. The garage no longer carries out mot's!

Thanks again guys. Had a look at it the other nite and decided to pack the shims with a bit of .4mm sheet steel, put it back together and bingo, no movement! Going back this weekend to see what he has to say (or if he even notices!) and with a little luck it will be ring-a- ding ding and blue smoke for another 12 months, HA!
