Was in the motor trade for 20 years up till about a decade ago,and always seemed to have peaks and troughs on a regular basis, speaking to mates who are still in the game its not changed that much, bit leaner now though due to the current financial crisis, folks are holding on to their cash as much as possible. I moved onto the railways and its constant all year round and better money, only beacuse the goverment subsidise it so much.

i work at a small wharf on the humber and we, plus a third party import timber from mainly scandinavia and the baltic region. you builders will know its all cls and truss. About 3 years ago it just died on its arse, and we were down at least a third both in terms of imports and staff, the last couple of years have seen stable but i just get the feeling this year is going to be really tough., truss manufacturers seem to be closing as quick as pubs at the mo.

even for 50 yr old poms like me as im a diesel tech by trade. ive got a few things going on at the mo so couldnt follow it up but im interested in work n i aint afraid of a bit of graft. Even better if you got trade like that behind you, listen it might take abit for work visa's & all that, but the benefits far out weigh any of that hassel! Diesel mech getting upwards of 160k to 180k aud, thats starting off etc,get some more skills behind you on the job & that figure goes over 200k.Underground is even more,A good mate of mine is underground, done a bunch of extra OH&S,first aid, rescue & supervisor courses, paid for by the company & he is on 320K aud!!!!Work 6 months of the year for 320K.What you got to loose?Besides,Id rather the mines employing like minded folks from the old land (lol) not a great bunch of indian/chineese imports. I can post up a bunch of sites if anyone interested. Plus Thailand is alot closer lol.....

Ive been off for about 11 months now in the construction industry in structural fire protection, first time Ive not worked for 20 years, but that's all over the country.got to think of a completely different job i think, but with the job seekers shite, I'm on a warehouse nvq with 2 tickets for forklift course, its free so why not . one good thing that I'm doing some rd125LC and mbx125 restores with my dad, built a new garage and spray area up his garden as well, but all said and done, still doesn't pay them bills. 20 foooking years at work and still get treated like them druggie no hope rs.

it seem that the bottom has dropped out of the motor trade as it just gets worse every year, perhaps its time for me to hang up my spray guns and look else where to earn a living :/...................
i remember doing my apperenteship at a posh bodyshop when i was 17 and the top painter who was teaching me always said to me that the bubble has burst in this game and i should quit and learn a new trade before i get too old,by the time i was 20 he packed in his job, sold his house and all belongings and started fresh in australia as a fireman and he still says its the best thing he ever done.

Well, just to add a bit of a positive slant to this, I'm an IT contractor for the defence industries & there seems to be loads of work around in my area.
Sadly I'm working away from home at the moment, living in digs 4 nights a week, but for £44 an hour, I can put up with it.

i was in the body shop business also for 23 years and saw the bottom dropping out of it , punters seemed to pay a fortune on mechanicals but never wanted to spend on the body , so i hung up the guns and went back on the spanners " WRONG" they wont spend on that now either

I'm a tax adviser dealing with everything from repayment claims for little old ladies up to some quite high level tax planning and investigations. My last year to September was not good as everyone seemed to be putting off work until they have to. Conversely, as my clients have to submit tax returns every year, the good news is since September up to the 31 Jan deadline I've been extra busy; although the planning work is still down. As I deal with a lot of small businesses I see in great detail how most of them are struggling, especially in the motor trade

For those interested, some links below, some sites you have to register to enter.I found the biggest hurdle was to have a local address for the area your applying for.The main thing I can stress is,keep trying!
