Do we have any mountain bikers in lc land. I am thinking about buying one, i have never had one before but i need to regain a bit of fitness (Pies and Beer seem to have taken hold of my mid riff). I have upto 600 quid to spend so any help would be very welcome.

Hi i built this for a lot less the £600.A bike of a lot lower spec would cost over £1000 in places like Halfords etc.I used e-bay and www.chainreactioncycles.com for parts.Try to go for the best gear you can i used Shimano mainly.

What you after. Cross Country? Road Riding? £600 will get you a very nice bike indeed. If your not fussed about buying 2nd hand you can get some amazing deals online. Take a look at brands like Specialized, GT, Cannondale and even some of the high end carrera bikes from Halfords are getting better and better. As a rule of thumb, the more you spend the better components your going to get. Look out things like SRAM and Shimano gearing, Truvativ cranks, Rock shock or marzocchi forks, marvic wheels and other high end companies. Hydraulic disc brakes although a selling feature, unless your spending serious money on them, a well set up cable pull V-brake will be more than up to the job. You can get billet 6 pot calipers, floating discs and radial master cylinders for mountain bikes now. The skys the limit. Im babbling on now, but selling bikes was my part time job for the last 4 years....PM me if you need any more

Both my bikes owe me the best part of 1500-2k But im no longer breaking bits every time i fall off. Ceramic wheel bearings/bushes are nice and maintenance free although pricey haha

Thanks guys, blimey wez thats a bit smart init! I seem to think claude butler were made near my in Brigg North lincs. I take on board what you guys are saying about building one up, my only concern is if i start building one there is no telling how long it will take to complete, I have an original Fireblade that i have been restoring for about 5 years and still haven't finished it lol
I have seen the following Trek 4900 / Cannondale SL4 / Specialized Rockhopper, they are all between 5 & 600, Any thoughts?

There all a very nice spec for the money. Toss up between the Cannondale and the Rockhopper. Not a knats c**k between them to be honest. Just got that little bit more on the Trek. FSA crankset's are nice bits of kit as apposed to the shimano on the trek

My biggest problem was getting a frame needed a 22" one and the Claud came up at the right price. When i went to Halfords they could not get me anything over a 20" and to be honest the bike that i liked they did have there @£849 when i got home and priced it up with me building it from on line shops i could do it for less the £450 that really made me decide to build my own.

I used to ride miles everyday, The thing people fail on is buying what looks the best and whats the most high tech i would say to go for one that dioes what you need but make sure its a good brand. I had a rocky mountain elevation that costs well over £1000 new and a Carrera kraken from 2002 that i payed £20 for and for what most people use them for theres no real noticable different in the riding. Have a Raleigh Team Banana Now Bad times .

This was my thinking too - for starters i don't worry about leaving it outside a shop if i pop in for a paper (who'd want to nick a ten pound bike (thats what mine cost me) and secondly although mine is a little hard to ride (binding brakes, shit gears etc) the whole point of riding it is for me is to get fit, so the harder it is the more good its doing me!! (that said i would love a good'un, but the cost of that means less money to spend on my already over budget LC rebuild!!)

My dad had a bike from the tip years ago, it had one of those locks that was in the frame and we didnt have a key for it. the lock could be activated without the key and it went thru the rear wheel spokes...When we moved house the helpful man with van popped back in when he was leaving to tell us he had locked the lock as he didnt want it stolen... fek! Took me ages to hacksaw the lock off LOL
Anyway, cos of this thread i spent two hours looking locally at bike parts online... LOL

I have bought a Gary Fisher Hookooekoo, you should have seen us trying to get in the back of our Mini . Just a quick bleet, coming back up the M62, absolutely lashing down, the spray is terrible and still cars are sitting on your bumper what the chuff is that about!!!!!!

Never fails to amaze me, i think they all have god as a passenger, not to mention the idiot that dives into the gap you have just made to the car in front.
I have ridden my bikes all over europe for years and after a week or so away a cloud descends on me as soon as i get off the ferry in good old blighty, by and large the standard of driving in europe is miles ahead of ours.

I got an Extreme Sniper, it's a budget bike (the brand anyway, as far as I know) but I only kept the frame as it looked pretty descent, plus some other minor parts. My dad found the bike in a hedge at work, (all tarted up) so he took it to the police and nobody came to get it, so he became the new owner. But then I got it. Not the best pic but here it is (and no, the LC isn't hanging i the ceiling lol, the mtb is, I just took the pic upsidedown): I've replaced almost everything on the bike, the only things that are left is the seat, rear brake, (though it now has new pads) handlebar mount and the crank. The plastic footpegs are still there though, I have a pair of aluminum pegs but I'm not too keen about the weight of them. It's a fairly heavy bike so I like to keep the weight down as much as possible as I use it to transport my arse from place A to place B. The best "upgrade" I've done so far is to change the massive Kenda knobby tires for a pair of 1,75" el cheapo road tires, it helped ALOT. Now I can pedal pretty fast without getting a heart attack. ;D I also got a new chain and rear sprockets for it, but I kept the front sprockets as they were pretty much like new, (and yes, I'm confident it'll hold up nice, even though I'm aware of the fact that you should never run a new chain on old sprockets) so I just gave them a clean up and painted them. I actually cut the biggest sprocket off aswell as I never use that big sprocket anyway. For me, it's just useless weight.
