welll....that was caused i think by a lack of oil causing pistons to overheat.that head wasnt my skimmed one,but the barrels are skimmed up top.i have to run them barrels with 2 base gaskets and a spacer.goes like fek tho...or did.squish was about 1.2mm duer to running a standard head.with my skimmed one i can get it down to about 0.9-1mm.timing set as standard.

lack of oil wont cause the damage you have to the top of those pistons, think its timming or too high compression. you dont just need to worry about the squish, its the heads volume too as your squish could be ok but head volume could still be low.

ok dude, cheers.i check it out before i run them barrels again.the volume of skimmed head will be low coz theres so much been took off it.having said that, wen i first got the bike, many moons ago,it came with the skimmed head and barrels, running spacer tween 2 base gaskets.and ran sweet as a nut.pulled from tickover all the way to red line and beyond.i was told lack of oil will cause motor to run hot and can cause similar damage to detonation.i have no idea ifits true.but will look into other possible causes anyways.just to b on safe side.

well,as you may or may not be aware,i have killed my motor again.its my own fault,i was warned, but figured i had sorted it this time with differant barrels etc.but anyhow,i at least need a set of pistons, which at this time i cannot afford.so in the meantime, before i pull the motor out,i figured i would have a go at some*free* modifications.i say free, but they aint really free, its a load of parts that i bort many moons ago for various projects that i never got round to starting and/or finnishing as yet.so anyhoo, heres some pics of what i have.... xj600 front end with fz600 top yoke and clip ons.i had planned on fitting these and retaining the elsie wheel, which i reckon would work with kr1 bearings and a couple of sleeves.this meant i could retain the thicker xj spindle.but then i had a bettererer plan.......i also have these..... kr1 wheel, and ..... these are zx6r discs, which fit the kr1 wheel.it was an e bay gamble that payed off.also in the pic is a pair of fzr1000/tzr250 calipers.i am hoping i can get away with using these, but i may well have a clearance issue with the wheel spokes.only just, but i think it is something i can get around with not too much fuss. with the kr1 wheel and speedo drive in,the front wheel sits too far over to the right..(sitting on bike) this is down to the extra material at the bottom of the fork leg seen here the r/h/ leg with the wheel and spacer fitted to the r/h/side,the wheel sits central,or as near as dammit anyways. so i think if i trim the inside of left leg,to match the right,i should be about right.maybe need a couple of shims or spacers making up just to get it perfik.here is a pic of the wheel sat in forks with discs on.nothing is bolted on or lined up,but you get an idea of how its guna look..... i should be getting my original lc swingarm back soon, and plan to fit this rear wheel in swingarm will need modifying.i know it would b easier to fit complete front and rear ends in,but as i say,i already have this front end.i want to keep the wheelbase the same as,or as close as i can get as a standard lc.i plan to remove the lc axle plates and weld new ones to take the thicker spindle on,these will need to sit a little wider than standard to accomodate the wider wheel, and may have to sit back a bit to allow clearance at the front.pics and info to follow as i advance with this project...

set to with the angle grinder a file and wet and dry today.ground the inside leg on the speedo side, and took a little off the speedo itself.i wont say ive got it spot on,but it is near as dammit.which is good enough for now.will make sure its spot on before final fitment.need to get some plates made up to allow use of the tzr/fzr brake calipers i have.think i will have to modify the xj600 front muddy too, just to get it to sit a little closer to the tyre, but will get a new tyre fitted before i go too mad.the one fitted is well worn, and maybe makes it look worse than it is,tho will deffo need adjusting.anyhow, heres a couple of pics of the wheel and muddy fitted. just waiting on my lc swingarm to return from my mates,so i can set too with modifying it to take the kr1 rear wheel.not sure how much of the original swingarm will be left by the time im done,as it will need widening a fair bit to get the wheel to fit.ive still got the motor to sort out from the last little mishap.but will be a while before the front and rear ends are ready for a trial fit anyways.will get motor re built, fitted and make sure everything is running as it should before i fit them.the good thing is,if i fit them and dont like them for wotever reason,i can always revert back to standard running gear,as i am not modifying anything on the frame to suit.got 2 weeks off work now,so hopefully i will be able to start on the rear end soon.

well,i think I have proved that I am lousy at keeping my build page updated.tho I would say,not as lousy as I am at building an lc.,, since the big bang @ my mates funeral, after much advice it appeared that I had either too little squish, too advanced timing,or a combination of both.oil pump was fubard as well, just to add to the mix. anyways, oil pump was sent to the resident guru arrow.who had to replace just about every moving part on it by all accounts.he said he hadn't seen one so worn before.he rebuilt it and it came back in amazing condition.i cannot recommend his service enough.it was set to flow a little more oil than factory, which isn't a problem for todays much improved oils as they burn much betterererer. anyhow,i had acquired a spare set of barrels a while back on0.5mm oversize.so I decided to fit these with my skimmed head.put bike together and everything seemed fine apart from the odd niggle in carberation which I planned to spend some time sorting out after I had bedded in the motor.it didn't need running in as such as the barrels and pistons were used, but I took it easy for 50 miles or so just to be sure. unfortunately,.i gave it big licks once I had covered my self inflicted 50mile bedding miles, sat at the ton for a few secs, then the dreaded stutter.luckily I have very good reflexes and got on the clutch quick smart.i was only a couple of miles from home so we gently trundled home. back home I pulled the head off once the motor had cooled to reveal piston crown damage on the left hand pot.so motor out and yet another strip down. what I found this time was a couple of groves on the crankshaft on the left hand side where the seal sits.so im guessing that she was drawing air and running lean.anyhooz, altho the piston was cack, the l/h barrel had only a bit of ally stuck to it,so I cleaned this off and got a pair of pistons and rings.fitted my spare crank, and we were away.i played with timing a bit.i found 1.6mm btdc felt and sounded the crispest, but thought that may be a bit much so re set to 1.7mm. once the pistons were given time to bed in,i could once again go into the powerband.but @ about 5k,i was getting a horrible grinding kinda noise, and a loud bwooaaarrr from the airbox.this cleared once in the power, but felt like she was gunna explode just before it.i put this down to jetting, and played around with mains and needle heights.needle height made the biggest difference, and seemed to move the range where this happened.raising needle and pulling airbox lid off made the thing fly,but I figured this wasn't the best set up for engine longevity and reverted to standard setup.after a while I noticed I was loosing a little water thro the hole in the expansion bottle.not a lot,but enough to wet the r/h/ exhaust.not wanting to take any chances I removed the head and fitted another head gasket.i ordered a new (pattern)gasket set and set about fitting.what a difference!!! the grinding and the bwooooaaarrrr from the airbox had virtually gone, tho not completely.but very definatly reduced considerably.i figured I could probably tweak this out with a few adjustments to the carbs.unfortunately, the pattern gasket had other ideas, and only lasted about 5 or 10 miles before it blew out big time. I have decided now that tho this may of been down to the pattern gaskets,it may also and probably more likely have been due to higher compression from running the skimmed head. so this time I would like to think that I have maybe learned my lesson a bit.i ordered a new gen yam head gasket...(first time ive ever had gem yam)and I have to say the difference between it and the pattern ones I have always used is amazing.i also swapped my skimmed head for an unskimmed one.tho I did polish up the combustion chambers.so now, apart from a bit of porting in the barrels and the polished chambers in the head,i have pretty much a standard set up.tho I haven't access to a timing guage at the mo,so my timing is still set at 1.7mmbtdc.im going to re set this to 2mm when my mate comes round.first start up wasn't good,as there was a lot of smoke and backfiring from the left hand side.i think this was due to water getting sucked in when the gasket blew.i took her for a brief ride so I could let her cool and do the retorque thing.when I started her after the cool down, normal service appeared to have been resumed.i still have the niggle at 5k,but no where near as bad,and im not going to try to do anything with it till I have reset timing to standard and see what happens. fingerz crossed, this will be the last time I have to rebuild the motor this year.i will try to update a little sooner this time.and get some more pics up when she has had a clean.....which she will only get if I can get over 100 miles without having to go through another rebuild.
