has any body tryed that petrol tank sealant stuff advertised in classic motorcycle mechanic's magasine?it looks like fibre glass resin and i think its about £30. the reason i ask is my mk1 125lc tank has a slight leak, undernieth what i thought was surface rust is atcualy porus rusty metal.im not sure if to risk trying the resin stuff or just replace it? im a bit gutted realy as i recently re-sprayed it and laqured all the decals in.

does that leak fix go inside or out side the tank?

Post by scott on Feb 19, 2007 22:15:50 GMT 1
it's like a body filler that goes on the outside of the tank which can be sanded, painted, drilled and tapped. but the holes i fixed were just pin holes m8 and i don't know how long it will last

dont use petseal....it cracks and breaks up after time. I used the aircraft spec stuff from tankcareproducts....its a bit like red treacle that you pour into the tank, swish it about a bit then allow it to harden. Worked a treat on my tank....took ages to cure though but worth the wait. Recommended.

kc104,with the red treacle type stuff from tank care products, did you use the cleaner they sell to clean the petrol residue out first?
im glad that people recomend these type of repairs as clean tanks arnt easy to come by and i dont want to paint another tank.

frost sealer it is then,my tank hasn got any visible holes, its just started to go porous so fingers crossed should be OK obviously the sealer goes inside,is it worth rubbing the rust down underneath and painting it in red oxide or zinc rich primer to slow the rust down,i don't want to rub it down too much in-case its like a sieve!

i would love to let some one else make a better job of it than i possably can, but for £150 i would rather find another tank and paint it my self to match the rest of the bike, its probaly worth it on tanks that are very old and very rare, unless its a job that i clearly cant do 99% of the time i try to do it my self to keep costs down, ive messed a few jobs up but i always think if you dont attempt it you will never know cheers any way ;D ;D

The best way to repair the tank is to sand blast the tank then weld up any holes, then seal the tank with a tank seal then prime and paint the tank. Thats the proper way its done.

Ive used flowliner on two tanks now and it has worked perfectly. It is very good.
Ive heard petseal doesnt last and eventually cracks and your back to square one.

the best way is to clean the tank, strip it back identify the rusty holes. drill them till you get clean metal weld the holes up. treat with a rust converter and then apply your favourite sealer paint and finish its a long process but worth it for peace of mind

Dodgy thing though welding fuel tanks................where the metal has rotted and gone very thin....it'd be a pointless task trying to MIG weld it.
Oxy/acetylene set would be much better.........but.......the tank needs to have been empty and dry for some time.
Most people solder or braze the tank.....my personal preference would be brazing.
I remember in the 80's there was a company that made ABS plastic tanks for LC's.....you could hardly tell them from the originals.
I have asked before on here about them , but no-one can shed any light on it. A friend of a friend had one on his 350 LC racer.
