KennyR' I'm totally jealous to your progress Obviously you are a veteran of lovingly restoring and improving old stock which is more than evident in your photos. From your initial images I can't believe how bad everything had deteriorated, particularly the frame/engine casings, when I thought I had a right pig with mine! What are you currently sorting and how?

CJ, nothing to be jealous about my friend, going is pretty slow, and im in no rush....
i have recently started a new job and i no longer have access to an engineering shop that i had before, so this has reduced progress quite a bit , so i will now have to source shotblasting and sprayshop work myself as well as any machine work,
first move was to strip down and asses everything, and to keep things ticking over just go to the classic bike shows etc and buy whatever i saw that i knew i needed ,irrelevent of a plan or order of work in mind.
all i know is that i want a great looking bike , not particularly a show winner, just something to enjoy, i really enjoy this kind of work, and have several mates doing similar things, Even My lad had had his first car for the massive sum of £100 (with full fuel tank and £80 worth of road tax ) and we are also working on this together....pic included of our work.......total spend ! about another £100, i love getting something for next to nothing !
my bike plans are to go to the uttoxeter bike show in staffs (july 4th) and see what i fancy, possibly just some stainless nuts and bolts and bits, and whatever i see. again, nothing planned.
the bike engine is getting stripped fully for an overhaul and check as it hasnt run for nearly 10 years that i know of . but i need the special tools for the clutch basket, and the puller for the rotor, so that has come to a stop for now. the head, barrels ,pistons, and outer covers are seperated and im getting ready to clean up and repaint (going for the bbq paint some of the forum guys recommend)
i have all the frame stripped of everything ready to shotblast and powdercoat, i also have 4 small boxes of shotblasted brackets, nuts and bolts and bits for zinc plating, my local platers can do quite a batch for £10 or £20 for cash ! :-)
so its little bits. my timescale is approx 2 years
and what about yours ?

25 years old....1 owner from new.......40,000 on the clock ....£100, but it didnt look like this when we got it.. i know its not an RD, but its a classic Starlet boxy, and the same thoughts and work go into this as with a bike resto.

Norbo, chrome is porus and will not hold back rust as well as zinc, unless you plate with copper in between, but this is a bit pricey. and if the polishing is done well, you really cant tell the difference, in fact the colour is (in my opinion) a bit better.
Shytalk, i would love to loan the tools , i am from staffs, so will be more than happy to pick em up, 1 weekend and ill have them back before you know it.....nice one !

KennyR' You're looking well set to stomp on with your build, but... you're just too damn organised! Just kiddin' my friend, but all those parts labeled up and ready to be plated! where's your sense of "Guesstimology" when the parts arrive back home in a single box? LOL. Let me know who your platers are and I'll get them to add "that one extra bolt" that'll stitch you ;D I admire your progress m8, keep it up Regards CJ

had a few hours in the garage today, stripped 2 carbs down to seperate components ready to clean up, stripped down the fuel tap removed the tank rubbers and sheared a nut in the tank, had to drill out, try to remove with an extractor, but ended up drilling out fully and re tapping .....bugger ! cleaned the frame off and found my number........matching the engine.....woop woop ! Question for anyone out there , does the filter stack pull out of the fuel tap?, or is this bonded...dont wanna knacker it by trying to clean it better. bought a bargain seat a couple of months ago...£8 ......mmmmm, not so much a bargain as i found it in a batch of rd bits in a show and founs out it was a suzuki GS seat....another bugger ! another question, i have a seat plastic base, (no foam etc) can this be made into a seat well, or is it better ans cheaper to buy a seat with foam and get it re covered, i want a nice piped custom seat cover....anyone recomend a good company ? dont know if i should just trim this back to the line....dont think it will be noticeable much ? chewed by wild animals ?

engine casing was a bit rough, just a bit of TLC on the engine casings, it been a while since i have had the time to do anything on the bike, just a few bits and bobs, some electrical progress to post a little later, and the ally welding to the dodgy barrel .

some pratt drilled through the whole barrel to hold the exhaust on with a 8mm nut and bolt. time for a bit of ally welding. drilling and tapping next on the list

sun faded red plastic......too much even for t cut and plastic polish......bring on the plastic paint ! quite a bit of time stripping down the wiring in the switchgear. pretty sorry state with grease, oil and dirt in the fittings and in the wiring, i have taken both switches apart, stripped down the switches and the wiring , cleaned each wire and the re - heat shrunk the sets of wires......worth the hassle !!! a bit fiddly drawing out all the wires from the 2 blocks, but it hels to remove these so the heat shrink can slide on !
