Hi m8. I used a genuine gasket on mine and even after the final torque down after running it had a TINY seep of coolant from between the barrels so i took head back off and put a tiny smear of sealer on both sides.Problem sorted ;D

If it's any help, i bolt the barrels on finger tight, tighten the head to the barrels (genuine gasket) and then bolt the barrels to the cases (assuming it's a YPVS). Never had a leak yet! Ian.

I'll second that method, had a motor once that refused to seal untill it was done this way. Have done my latest with a set of norbos quality gaskets and used the NK offset torque wrench tool to tighten the base bolts then torqued the head. Not fired it up so will have to wait to find out if it worked. Steve.

IMO fitting either a pattern head gasket or a pattern throttle cable to your moneypit rebuild is false economy BIN THERE DUN THAT

I have built a lot of engines over the years and so long as you ensure the jointing face of the cylinder and the cylinder head are flat, (I use grinding paste on a surface plate or if they're really bad a little skim with the mill). Then decent pattern head gaskets, (NP or Vesrah), are perfect for the job I've never had one leak yet. You should never have to use a jointing compound with any gasket A smear of grease on most gaskets is adequate, but LC, (4LO/4L1), head gaskets should be fitted dry Yam gaskets are good but they aren't a must have at all costs ps: Always remember! After initial torque down, warm the engine and torque down again. I hope this helps as standard head gaskets can be ridiculous prices, (depending where you buy them).

Theres no definate answer to this is there! I asked a while ago and though I havent fitted the head yet Im going for smear of oil on base gaskets and dry genuine head gasket very soon, I hope.....

Like you say, there's no definitive answer The only thing you can say for sure is, correct preparation is everything. No matter which gaskets you choose, if the surfaces aren't perfectly flat, the joint will fail
