Just taken her out for the first run. The bike has been well put together brakes, suspension , etc. The problem seems to be the carbs I think. It ticks over about 3000rpm when hot, only 1200 when cool. When it comes into the power band its still a bit flat. It goes but is a bit slow. I have no idea how to setup the carbs, its been 25years! Ok I am old! It is running K+n filters not sure what the jetting should be. How do you balance the carbs???
Please help if poss

Id have a look at what jets are in just now and the clip position on the needle and let us know what its set at now. But i allso tend to agree that if its not tuned up then a standard Air box is best .

Ok Thanks all. Will take the carbs off it and tell you the set-up. Can put the standard airbox back on, as he gave me this with the bike, would like to keep the allspeeds on.. Although he also gave me a set of standard pipes aswell. Will it run better with these on. The mid range on the bike is good, its the top end stuff i think is flat. Give it a fist in first and it doesnt pick the front end up. I had several RD400's I am sure they were faster. Or is it just my memory and the exup, bandit 12, ducati 900, rsvr, 955 daytona and gsxr750k4 that have gone in between. ??

as above : re install the stock airbox as it will pull more strongly with it.. also ease the jetting burden. IF keen, your cyl head looks to have a thick gasket in there. If possible, do try and reset the things' "squish" to 0.9mm. It will make noticeable improvement. A reasonable assumption that you have gotten used to more advanced machinery over the years. But with a bit of coaxing this bike should still be moderately entertaining.

Have just stripped the carbs. The Slides have got blck overspray on them. The jets say 310 on them . The needles have the clip on the bottom groove. The carbs have got 31k on them. Can you tell me the correct settings? What are the air screw settings??? I am going to put the standard air box back on

Not too sure on clip position but on a 4L0 its in the middle groove. The black on the slides is a non stick teflon coating not overspray. HTH OEB

i'm running a pv lump in my lc with large can allspeeds and 31k carbs and it's all set up as above execpt for needle clip poistion which is either 1 from top or 1 from bottom, sorry i can't be more spot on but it's been a while since i set it up,just try either 1 and you'll soon tell the difference, and barrels are std with no tuning.

HTH OEB i have gen old school big can allspeeds on my ypvs and ran 250's to air on the side of caution as my history with 2 strokes is messy lol and still managed to melt both piston crowns due to running lean, i am running 260's in mine also on premix (not taking any chances this time) and she is almost spot on by the plug chop, so if your going to run 240's plug chop early just to cover your ass as you dont want it letting go when your 50 odd miles from home on the motorway like i was lol.... jazz When running premix you should always upjet to allow for the oil & petrol to pass the jet OEB
