Why are British buyers prepared to pay double the price that people in other countries will pay for old bikes?

Why are British buyers prepared to pay double the price that people in other countries will pay for old bikes? Did you not say you paid over the odds for your F1 project? Maybe you can answer your question yourself? Or was it rhetorical? Jon

Why are British buyers prepared to pay double the price that people in other countries will pay for old bikes? There'll be a reason I guess, maybe all will become clear with the fullness of time?

It was just a simple question that's all.
Just very odd when you look on Facebook and see what Americans are selling bikes that we pay small fortunes for, for really low prices. I'm interested why we do it as we are only the 27th most prosperous nation in terms of GDP/head. Why we restore bikes in a grossly uneconomic manner, pay fortunes for donor bikes in dreadful states and then pay even more to build them back. I've been caught badly once paying a lot unseen for 4 boxes of junk but that was my idiocy. What stumps me is what ever held up the bubble that was classic bike prices in the UK. It is collapsing rapidly and yet some people are still paying what I see as totally unrealistic prices for restored bikes many done very badly?
As I say just a question.

The high price in the UK is driven purely by them being so iconic back in the day
USA never got these officially so no 50/60 year old reliving their youth
In the UK it was a perfect storm of the 250 learner law, the LC's being such a step forward and the fact that bigger bikes were more expensive, lardier and not any faster

But the Americans still got all of the sports bikes? They just didn't get this perhaps bizarre attraction we get to the concept and lifestyle image rather than the bike itself? Does the image justify the extra millions that UK buyers have paid over the years bringing in imports and buying used to satisfy a demand that is as high as when the bikes were actually sold maybe? Companies were set up bringing in, for example, ship loads of Triumph twins and Honda fours due to the massive price difference between the countries. I'm not saying right or wrong, only a major difference in how we look at buying the bikes of our youth. It is patently psychological as modern bikes are just so much better in every respect?

Maybe the Americans don't have access to rose tinted spectacles?

Probably nothing to do with this thread but is about silly bike prices. I have been after a Triumph Thruxton or Speed Twin 1200 second hand, but for example a 2016 Thruxton are still 7 grand upwards for an eight year old bike FFS

Art, antiques, vehicles, stamps, coins, watches (😂😂😂😉), wine, whisky, pure bred animals.. there’s an endless list of things humans aspire to own… and functionally all have ‘equivalents’ at fraction of the price… so I really don't understand why it seems so much of a mystery to you! Oh.. and then there’s guns… Americans collect guns .. lots of them, ones not enough… maybe wanting the odd old knackered bike from the 80’s is fairly sensible by comparison 😂 PS…FYI …if I was allowed to swap a LC for a Barrett M82 I’d do it tomorrow 🙈

There is only one thing you should aspire to own, and that's critical thinking. And it's free. If everybody owned it we would not be paying megga bucks for old "tat"

Well, it's made a bit more money! Seems t***v is very keen to have it. With only a few hours left to run, I'm going to say it'll finish at £6800, the extra few hundred going on in the last minutes.....

Absolutely beyond all rational belief. Still up to the buyer what he wants to pay.

As soon as you register and use it the prime value has gone? Surely nobody would have a bike and decide not to use it even a collector.
