Dont mind tinkering but kinda burnt out at 59 building and spannering bikes so rather just ride them service them and ride again.

As bikers we are truly blessed in being able to ride, create and conserve our machines when so few on 4 wheels have this ability for many reasons. We are the luckiest of all in terms of the amazing highs we get from riding a bike and also having the ability to do amazing things with them in such a small space in many cases. The difference in time that we spend riding or building is of great interest but they are really two sides of the golden coin that is motorcycling.

Personally, the only time I ride and enjoy it is on a track day. I can just give it a good thrashing. Not worry about cars, junctions, potholes and other road users who don't seem to give a damm about other people. I can concentrate on my riding and relive my old days. So it's 90% tinkering and 10% riding.

I only ride in decent weather these days and of course we don't always get too much of that here, so I spend more time in the garage building/fixing/modifying/tinkering than I do riding.
That said, I split my time nowadays about 60/40 between the UK and Spain, of course in Spain, most days of the year are riding days. Over the last 2 years, the bikes I have here maybe covered 2000 miles between them whereas on bikes in Spain over the same period, I've ridden about 22000 kilometres, about 14000 miles.
Spain tends to be 99% riding and 1% tinkering, it's the other way around when I'm in the UK, but combined, it probably works out to 50/50 overall.

Ownership is my bag, I do like to own stuff and dont ride much. A simple ride out to a cafe or show on a Sunday is all I get up to now. Here is a list of what happened this year 2023, and remember, this lot is taxed Mot'd and insured......VFR800 - 2 miles (mot/fuel) MBX12F - 35 miles (MOT and trip to 1 event in the summer) MV Agusta F4 - 2 miles (MOT and fuel) MV Agusta Brutale - 230 miles (Sunday morning trips) RD350 - 200 miles (Sunday morning trips). I also have a Porsche Boxster summer car that covers about 500 miles a year. looking at it that little lot seems a waste for the miles I do, but tinkering/servicing and improving takes up my other spare time, add in family, a new grandchild and a largish garden to look after and you can see why. In the near future I am downsizing everything and going to make things simpler.

50/50 for me maybe more on spannering than riding as I have a few british bikes generally do 2500-3000 miles a year on all bikes, think I've done about 1k on the Norton commando alone, all the two strokes get 300-400 each just to keep them in good health.

The mind is willing, the body not as much these days! Like everyone, age is the governing factor!
I do look after the old bikes, but the new, go to the dealer, far too much plastic and tech to make a mess of.
One thing that’s becoming apparent now, I went to the new Yamaha dealer opening on the LC…. No one even batted an eyelid….. basically, today’s generation are only concerned about their time of life bikes….. And when you think about it, if an old bloke turned up with some old Brit bike back in our day…. We would’ve done just that!

Excellent question which has made me think and this is something I try to avoid at all costs according to the other half ! So, after spending well over a decade restoring my lc I couldn't wait to finish it, get it out on the road and enjoy it. However, since it's been finished (March 23) it's been sat in the garage and hasn't turned a wheel in anger. It's not that I haven't had the oppertunity either, been out on the BMW at the drop of a hat and covered many miles so not sure whats happening. The only thing I am sure about is that I really miss tinkering about in the garage with the occasional beer at hand. On this occasion I can only put "no riding" in the survey but this will almost deffinately change next year ! Yes, I know I need another project, got enough parts to build one but can't seem to find a frame to bolt it all to, the last one on Ebay was banana shaped FFS !!

For me getting the spanners out is a requirement to keep the old F2 going. But riding is the reason I bought the bike and I've done around 3000-4000 miles this year, mainly with a group of 2-strokes is so much fun, it's like being 19 again just with a few more aches and pains.

Spent the last few years doing more riding than spinning spanner's, hopefully when I retire soon that will all change.

I think having the ability of “twirling the spanner’s” is part of the deal owing any old bike or car.
I knew someone that only had modern bikes (only serviced by the local garage) that then bought a LC on a whim, but because they never worked on bikes they unfortunately soon fell out of love with the idea of owning a LC with all its quirks, reliability and the need to work on it now and then.
In a modern age we take reliability of bikes and cars for granted, but back in the 1980’s breaking down and fixing it by the roadside was part of the “fun”of owning either a car or bike 😂😂

Todays society stinks, give youngsters a spanner, and straightaway they will be on the phones, googling how to use em ?

When I first had an LC my leather jacket weighed half a ton. Every pocket had spanners, screwdrivers, spare plugs etc...
Alex
ps Now I can fit all of that in my wallet...
