Afternoon peeps. Including images in posts is a bit of a pain, so I'm setting up an easy to use, no frills image hosting thing just for the RDLC Crazy board. imgur.com and photowhatsit are OK, but there is a certain amount of faffing around needed to use them. This is just a simple upload the image, get a link thing. No logins, account management or anything. It's at a very early stage but it's working if you want to try it out. 50d.it/lc
That's the link. Don't share it with non forum people please. I don't want to have to start adding accounts or anything and I'm not going to make it commercial with ads. This is just for us, yeah? Let me know if you have problems or suggestions. - It will improve over time, but probably quite slowly.
- I'm currently thinking about auto-deleting photos that are a year old as a way of managing disk space.
- Don't use it to store important things.

Hi
The only issue I see is that you don't want it shared by non forum users
It is an open forum so anybody can see that link

And as said, deleting images over time kind of ruins threads, as photof**ket proved when they went on a mad one.
Tapatalk works fine for image hosting, piece of piss to do, so much so I binned off my flikr account as I only really needed a image hosting site to post on here, the other main one is pistonheads, and that has its own uploading feature.
Plus I'm not sure if just a link appears in the post and not the image ? That would annoy me to be fair if that's the case.

It's early days yet, but I'll make it so you can copy the code for an inline image after the upload. I don't mind about other places linking to it because most of the traffic will come from the rdlccrazy board anyway. I'm not aiming to replace any services that anyone likes using - this is just a quick hack for quick posts because I got pissed off with how many clicks I had to do with imgur. The use for it would be when you are writing a post, realise you want a picture, open up a new tab and type 50d.it/lc. Then just drag and drop an image and then click a button to get the URL or the BBCode copied to the clipboard, close the tab and CTRL-V it in.
As for longevity, how about deleting it if no one has viewed it for a year? It's not a service for storing last will and testaments, but more for disposable snapshots that are of the moment in a conversation.

I applaud your efforts mate, its great youre thinking of us. Some of the long build threads last over a year and the first posts will maybe not be viewed too often, thats the problem with deleting stuff.

I'd think k if someone is doing a build thread they'd have image hosting sorted for that
This will be good for the members just querying something or stuff in the sale section

Over the years Ive used Imnageshack, photof**ket and others, even hosted myself. All of those failed in the end and left me with long threads without pics in em. A few years back I started to use imgur and that has recently moved to an option to have accounts if you want longevity (pics die after a year if not viewed etc). But.... I fear thats a slippery slope. account sigh up today, paid soon after. Been there many times before sadly. I do appreciate that hosting pics is a thankless task. Massive storage for no gain. No one wants that on their watch. But, old threads without photos kill the net. In IT terms storage is cheap these days, but not if you want any lol

That's a right p1sser Jon
I too lost a lot through photobucket then through my own fault with Dropbox
Thankfully those threads are 10 years old now and nobody looks at them
I'll keep paying the $3 a month for tapatalk VIP
Christ I'm having to pay £5 a month for an email account 🙄

I pay 6 quid a month for Flikr. It's the safest way for me to keep all the pics on here without getting held to ransom like Photomuthaf**kers did, and subsequently losing loads of pics from threads I've uploaded, probably, near to 4 and a half thousand pics to the forum. If I lost them, I definitely ain't doing it all again !!

Interesting. Thanks for all the feedback. My main problem is that although my server account gives me 2TB bandwidth per month, it's only got 100GB of disk space for all the sites and the OS. I've currently got 200GB left on my Mega storage so I'll look into archiving images there.

I'm not sure this is going to help much to be honest.
Until proboards have an image upload service, it's always going to be a too much of a pain to upload images for a certain user group.

Im old school. I believe the internet should be free.
I never charged for access to any of the info on my sites and it cost a lot over the years Ive been doing forums and having sites, 25 years etc. But i never wanted money for it cos it should be free.
Ive always felt the same about pic hosting. hence i refuse to pay... to my detriment i suspect, but hey ho.

imgbb doesn't require you to sign in or register. Just go to imgbb.com, drop your file, select Don't Auto delete and copy the BBCode link.

Im keen to have a look, but how long does the pic stay around on the net? (and will it always be the way it is now?) FWIW Imgur was no sign up and pics stayed forever... now things have changed. Im sure the others like imageshack and pb etc started like this too. Over the years many, many pic hosting sites have come and gone. I was thinking... "What have i learnt about the biz?' hmm... well, there is no money to be made when its free, or when they charge for it... The services all eventually end. I still applaud Naith's attitude with this, its great he's thinking about us as a community. We sadly dont see that from too many members. Good on him!

I have been using imgbb for a few years, but there is no guarantee that it will be around forever, that's just the nature of the internet. Even if you paid for it there is a possibility that one day they decide to simply close the business. Then again there are no guarantees that Naith's option will be around forever, due to circumstances beyond his control. I do wonder why imgbb do it for free, I suspect that any pics you upload you relinquish image rights and they can sell some interesting ones royalty free?

I think I must have a very low bar threshold when it comes to perseverance level for uploading stuff… just me, i know that…thought I’d give this a go but not happening… very occasionally I manage to use taptalk to upload something but it takes me ages to do whatever I’m supposed to do… Basically seems I’m a grade 5 Luddite 😂

I've done some improvements -
Multiple file uploads - up to a maximum of 5 at the same time. The uploaded page is a bit more useful. Still ugly but more functional. Click on the image to copy the link. Bettter error checking. Multiple file names can be copied to the clipboard - e.g. you upload 5 images, click "copy all image codes" and paste into a post here and it'll do all 5 images one after the other. Set the maximum width to 100% so images aren't wider than the page.

Just in case you thought I'd forgotten about this. It's getting quite handy, if I say so myself. This is a video of me inserting a picture into a forum post in 4 seconds (best viewed in 720p or above). Feel free to give it a go, but any pictures you upload will be deleted before the site goes live properly. 50d.it/lc
