As if trials riding isn't hard enough on a modern bike or a 70's twin shock, I've opted to have a pop on a '65 BSA B40 engined Drayton. For those that don't know, Drayton are a company in Tunbury Wells area that manufacture frame kits for old motors such as BSA Bantam, C15, B40, Triumph 350 Twins, Villiers 2T etc. Having ridden someone else's it was a revelation so thought I'd try one. In my usual manner it's been here a few days and is in bits having the once over.. So for good reason the Hybrid is under a sheet for a while! Drayton B40. 1 by KTM Marky, on Flickr

Certainly different to working on the Metric LC, but that’s the fun and who doesn’t like a set of BSF helicoils and taps in their toolbox!! Duplex chains and primary drives rock!

Have a mate with a very trick tiger cub he uses for trials
Quite fancy something Brit from 65 as my birth year.

I’ve been invited to tilton on the hill for a pre 65 meet/weekend by a mate he has an Ariel 350 and a triumph twin for pre 65 trials, we were talking about these frames aren’t they £2200? For a frame kit? He rode one recently and was impressed. Quite fancy having a go. I’m wasn’t even thought of in 1965 though 😁

I’m putting an REH front end on mine which has just arrived and some Villiers Engineering hubs, tubeless rear etc. they do ride really nicely - give it a go & the Triumph twins sound fantastic by the way. Pre 65 trials is a bit more achievable than the magic you see on modern bikes.

It may look very similar to the first pic, but here is what I've done: REH Forks, Yokes, H'bar mounts, Fat Bars, Front muddie, new front brake arm, shoes & modified brake plate AMAL 622 carb and custom manifold (needs Tufnol spacers!) Re-machined foot rest hangers & rear brake pedal Custom rear brake arm & fittings Ally barrel - much cleaner than original. Top end stripped and vales re-seated. New oil feed pipework to head and oil tank fittings Pete Kirby Dry clutch - 1 finger light!! New Chain CG 125 Rear brake plate - modified to fit.. Custom rear wheel spindle, new larger wheel bearings & spacers front & rear. 17mm up from 15mm Every nut & bolt turned to length and finished properly Bash plate tidied up and re-machined Shock mounts uprated new rear muddie - fitted centrally this time and ally plate/chain guard Tank & Seat mounts tidied and aligned All new cables made from my new Venhill kit & solder pot Manifold & Amal MK1 622 by KTM Marky, on Flickr Pete Kirby Clutch by KTM Marky, on Flickr Dabbers 03.09.23 by KTM Marky, on Flickr Dabbers 1 03.09.23 by KTM Marky, on Flickr

Insulated the carb. It got properly hot first time out so these Tufnol spacers should help.

I take it you you were having fueling issues as the carb heated ?
Slow speed not drawing in enough cool air through the filter to combat the heat off the motor.

I take it you you were having fueling issues as the carb heated ? Slow speed not drawing in enough cool air through the filter to combat the heat off the motor. Sort of. It was popping a bit on idle like it was lean when hot, so fuel was vapourising. Another chap on a Drayton 350 Triumph sat alongside me at a section said to me to feel how hot the carb was. So I took off a glove and couldn't actually hold it as it was really hot & no wonder it was popping. These Tufnol spacers (& I could have used just 1 possibly) should help reduce the heat transfer. I machined off 3mm from the motor side flange too just to keep the overall length similar, but not that it's particularly scientific.. Waiting on a kick start side case gasket and a teak to the oil feed connectors before throwing it at the scenery again soon. My motor has an ally barrel from the BSA Victory scrambler which is way lighter, but won't dissipate heat as well as cast iron.

A friend with a Liberator had a similar problem. It would drive ok but on hot days it would start to pop and bang and if you stpped it was very difficult to start until it cooled down. I put a heat shield in front of the carb. It helped a lot but didn't completely cure it.

It all looks very smart.
I'd have thought the alloy cylinder would dissipate heat quicker/better than a cast iron one?

"Cast aluminum has a hands-down advantage as a heat conductor, with a thermal conductivity of 160, while that of cast iron is 52"
Google agrees that Ally dissipates heat better than cast iron, but it's dissipating to the atmosphere so what does that mean if the heat can't go any further?? Maybe it just heats up quicker to a certain temperature..

Heat dissipation is one thing, but you also have radiation. (Infared) which will also add to the over heating of your carbs.

It’s why barrels used to be painted black it dissipates heat quicker. Could you fabricate a small alloy heat shield between the carb and barrel? Is your 66 bonnie a Uk or US import? Had a 65 west coast years ago loved it.

I could make a physical heatshield, but I doubt it'll be necessary with a double Tufnol set up.. I do need to make a rain cover for the air filter mind & before Sunday as I've a trial and a good chance of rain. Bonnie is/was US East coast as it does not have the seat strap - lord knows really... Beautiful bike. I changed mine fitted alloy rims, guards etc hi level pipes a Us tank pancake filters etc it used to really wind up the standard bike brigade. I grew up with triumphs dad had them until late 80’s when he finally bought a jap bike and was blown away by how good they were. My older brother still has my dads 78 us t140 that he bought from apple motorcycles in Leicester. I’m seriously looking for a Greeves or a cub at the moment as my mates belong to the taverners.

I already have this motor to put into my new frame when it arrives. Could even do a build thread if folks are interested.
