I was looking at fitting some as above plates on my Suzuki GT 1976, I know I can have them, but I just thought, when did they stop using them from new and go to Yellow & White for front, I got an answer, ish, early seventies, but Yellow & White started around 1968.
I also got an answer I thought I should share.
CAN I PUT BLACK AND SILVER NUMBER PLATES ON MY CAR?
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency explained that in 2015 that vehicles manufactured more than 40 years ago were eligible to display the traditional black and silver number plates.
However, coming into effect from the 1st January 2021, there has now been a change and going forward, any vehicle constructed after 1 January 1980 are now ineligible to display the black and silver number plate despite being recorded in the DVLA’s historic tax class. Those vehicles with a construction date prior to 1 January 1980 will continue to be able to legally display black and silver number plates to avoid any undue costs of replacement.
On top of this, from the 1 January 2021 it will no longer be permissible to fix a new number plate displaying a Euro symbol. Number plates already fixed to vehicles are unaffected. The DVLA will also be introducing a new British Standard for number plates produced from 1 September 2021 which will mean all current style number plates that are first fixed to a vehicle from that date must meet the technical requirements contained in that standard.
Before you start your order for a number plate though, your vehicle must also be in the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class. Details can be found on the gov.uk website on how to apply for this.
EXEMPTION FROM VEHICLE TAX
I have seen some pics with Black & Silver plates on bikes posted on here.

As far as I knew the original rule was vehicles registered after 1st Jan 73 needed to be yellow

Im with Steve on this.
Ive mentioned it before but I had a 1972 Alfa regd on an M'reg. The car was allowed to wear black/silver plates due to age but not the reg as it was newer (which is an impossibility according to DVLA now) lol Luckily no one worried too much about that stuff in the 90s. lol
Ive found a lot of the modern net stuff is at odds with the old rules and procedures. But hey its the DVLA dont expect it to be fast/right/easy etc. if its not very very simple.
Personally i think vehicles post 72 look weird with black/silver plates but get that people like them.
Anyway, good info Tony.

I have a black/silver plate made up for the TR
Yes totally legal now to wear it but as the vin is 72 manufactured and 73 registered back in the day it would have been yellow
Think even before the recent changes 75/76 was still "ok" and police didn't bother but as Jon says the newer stuff looks funny
Think the only time I'd stick one on an LC was if I did a monochrome black/silver hybrid build as may blend in quite well

I think the Black Silver plate does suit the GT750 styling, It just looks right, I don't think it looks right on an LC, even though you can legally have one on an early LC.

For me it’s a case of just because you can doesn’t make it right ! There’s inevitably a little bit of novelty factor when you can legally put a black/silver on an old bike … a and hands up , I did on my silver dust AC350. But after a while I felt it just didn’t look right, wasn’t’ how I remember them as they were’.
On my oldest owned LC I still have the aluminium yellow plate with stick on black letters… still legal because that’s how it’s always been…it’s a bit scruffy… but I can live with that... To me that’s far more appealing ( brings a bigger smile to the face) than a black silver.. new laminated yellows… for road riding… they are what they are… small yellow ‘show plate’… that’s an essentially must have for any allspeeded up, micron braced, boysen fed , drop barred back in the day hooli replica !

I am still in two minds whether or not to fit Black & Silver or not, for the same reason you stated.

I never took the pi$$ with the size, just made it to suit the layout and never had an issue with the law or MOT. Some of my mates had stupidly small plates then moaned about being stopped. I still have the plate. I wonder if they would be OK about it now. I doubt it.

I wouldn't try these days either, I just don't want to be stopped in the 1st place, half the reason I haven't bitten on the Black & Silver plate and bought one yet. I shouldn't really say, "But" I have three strikes for possession of cannabis in my youth, when it was considered serious, a stop always means a search, and that is embarrassing at my age, pulled over being searched at the side of the road is not nice, they catch you with a, have you ever been in trouble with the law, to which you answer NO, they then check computer, it says drugs marker, they say we are going to search you as you have previous, if you say yes I have been convicted of possession, they say, because of what you have told us, we are going to search you, its catch 22, you can't provide an answer that doesn't get you searched. I understand its illegal and its my own fault, but it has followed me for 40 years, so I just don't want to be stopped in the 1st place. I am sure there are plenty on here that had a smoke back in the day and never got caught, I am no different to them, but I am treated ruff by Po for it.

There's people with much worse in their past I'm certain. I often walk or ride past cars these days and the unmistakable smell of week is coming from them. So that's people driving while smoking it but there's so few coppers about it's hard to see them being pulled.

The number of times I'm walking and smell the whacky backy with passing cars is endemic round here !
Walking to fetch the little one and parents smoking it in their cars as they pass and even on carpark when we fetch them from Brownies Every other works van ,never known it like this
Drug drivers need hauling in
Walked up local woods the other week and 2 couples we passed stunk of it ! At least they weren't driving !

Its a hole different ball game now, with skunk and synthetic stuff, 10 to 100 times more powerful than the old solid stuff we had back in the day, I smell it everywhere I go nearly these days, in all types of places, kids in the cars while parents smoking weed, not right man, you can damage their fragile brains with passive pot smoking, and that's fact.
The thing is with most of the drivers that smoke it, well they don't have any previous, so they don't come up as I do, if a car with NPR comes behind, I know there is a good chance I am getting pulled over, depends what markers they have set, plenty don't have the markers so don't get pulled, though as said by others you can smell it when cars go by.

I really didn’t know that stuff you did 40 years ago would still come up on the police database. I guess that means someone transferred that written data into digital format. Pity the people that went from the old paper format licenses to the new type lost their motorbike entitlement.

A mate in our group recently got pulled on his modern Triumph coz he had a black and silver plate. The copper asked him to step into the car to see why they had stopped him. The anpr camera was doing its job at all the vehicles driving past. But when it was pointed at his b/w plate it showed nothing. The cop was ok with him and said go and get a legal plate.

A friend of mine who turned 70 recently got a new plastic license and they’ve got full motorbike entitlement. They’ve never ridden a bike in their life 🤷♂️

I fitted a pressed ali plate to my 400 hybrid just before I sold it. I thought it looked better than the yellow/black plate. Not sure if the new owner is riding around with it on, or reverted back to standard; 20220123_142731 by dusty miller, on Flickr Obviously too small for Plod, but hey ho !! Dusty

One evening many many years ago I had just finished work at Heathrow. It was about 2am and no traffic on the roads at all. I had a 350LC back then and caned it riding home, saw a couple of cars and that was it. Got home and put the bike in the garage and thought no more of it. About 30 minutes later there's a knock on the door and two very pissed off looking coppers are glaring at me. One shoves my (tiny home made) number plate into my hand and said 'this fell off your bike about 6 miles back whilst we were trying to catch up with you'. I apologised like mad and was told that no harm was done but if they ever see me again riding like that...
Times were better back then I think.

I could trim the perspex plates to my hearts content and also use smaller letters and misspace lol. We used to make floppy plates for off road bikes so they didnt get broken in falls and they were smaller and many of my bikes used those. I did a bunch for customers back in the day as well for him. It was great using their workshop of a weekend haha. My garage walls are covered in my old plates. lol

Are there drug driving tests and laws in the uk now? we have roadside drug tests here along with many RBTs and they do catch a good few from the stats.

I still got my paper licence, I get told to change it, but I know I don't have to, it says valid until 20XX I've hired lots of cars in the US, I used to cringe when the rep attempted to fold it up. Every way but the right way, in the end I offered to do it just before they started. The folds get thin in any case but reverse folding didn't help. 🙄
