Had some new glasses and is it right or wrong when the opticians say you need to wear them for a few days to get used to the new prescription or do you think things should be ok from the start ?

For varifocals that can happen especially if lens height is different to your previous glasses. Never had it with normal reading glasses.

Mine are for distance and I wear them all the time They aren't varifocal but I have a slight astigmatism and I get the floor coming up at me !

Yes will take a week or so
My wife had the same. Your brain compensates for things to a degree so takes a while to adjust

Yeah but those that feel wrong at the start, don't tend to get better at least for me.
I had David Cudlow take back a pair and re-test my eyes. 2nd attempt with a new prescription was much better.
My family and I are unfortunately all glasses wearers. We've found Costco to be almost faultless and one of the cheaper places too. Highly recommended.

I agree with you abar but going to wear them solid over the weekend and will contact them monday if still getting that sensation I was going to a local run family business but found out this visit that they had retired and now have a new owner but decided to give them a try

My Mrs had a temporary eye problem that made things like a door frame or her I pad look wider at one side
She got glasses for it and when she first put them on everything looked wrong but the opposite of before
Over the next week her vision went back to normal
When her eyes went back to normal and she got new glasses again without the correction everything looked squint again as she had adjusted to not having the condition but wearing the corrected glasses.
Again over the week her vision went back to normal
In saying all that I went to the same optician to get varifocals for driving
Needed them for reading the dash and a slight distance correction in one eye
First put them on and distance vision was blurry in both eyes so I said they were wrong. Guy argues they aren't and checks on my prescription and says again they are right
No they feckin ain't I said so he put the glasses in the thing that tells what prescription they are
He was really embarrassed when it showed they had put the distance correction in the wrong eye
Sent them back to get sorted and they came back with only one lense in them 🤣
Third time lucky they were fine but driving with varifocals takes a bit of getting used to 🤪

It takes a couple of days for your brain to get used to them
First time I went from the NHS black plastic frames to metal frames every corner of the ceiling looked like they were curvilinear squares
When I started wearing contacts everything looked huge, compared to glasses
As my eyes changed through the years, I had to start wearing reading glasses, my arms weren't long enough
As a suggestion, my optician suggested one lens for distance and one lens for reading, I gave him a resounding NO
I wear multi-focals when I don't have the contacts in, when set up right they are really good, it took two goes to get them correct though
You'll be fine

Which leaves me back at square one Been given another opticians who works for the local hospital too but what a pain I wear vari-focals and the last time I got some I bought two pairs. I wore one and kept the others for 'best' and as a back up but they never felt right. Even though it was one eye test used for both sets the second pair never did seem right. That was before Covid. This time I bought two sets again but one of them are sun glasses. I couldn't get on with vari-focals at first and had to have two or three goes at them before I finally got used to them. Wouldn't be without them now.

Good luck at the next opticians.

Well I will try the new opticians, I don't have a choice ! My prescription is for short sightedness only so a basic prescription really, nothing complicated

On the subject of glasses, I have misplaced my readers. They are folding ones and very handy as they fit in a small case that slips into my pocket. If anyone can give my any pointers as to where I put them down and lost them, I'd be very grateful..... I remember when I did put them down saying to myself "dont put them there....you'll forget them" but alas the senile old fart within did not listen.....

I'm going to quote what my Mam always used to say in the event that I told her I was looking for something. I always found it very helpful. "Where did you have them last?" Why is it you find something in the very last place you look? Simple, you stop looking when you've found it 😃 Hope this helps.

Progressives (as we call varifocals here in the states) take some getting used to. They can vary greatly between manufacturers and labs. The location of the focal points can be quite different, and your brain/eyes need some time to adjust. Also some wearers just can't get on with them no matter what.
I love mine. Took about a week and there was no looking back.

I wear glasses for reading and driving, the rest of the time its sort of OK, apart from pending eye ops, I will have to wait and see about that. Every time I go to the optician, I can see straight away, the guy try's all the different lenses in the multi lens contraption until you can see better, he then goes and puts those type lenses in the frames, I have never been told you will get used to it, they always work straight out the box, I would expect the same from any optician, it doesn't make sense to me that you would have to get used to them, after all the lenses are to help you see better, and when trying on the different lenses, they stop when you can see better,, no it doesn't make sense to me, sounds like someone clucked up and trying to get you to accept unsuitable specs, I would argue that case before even paying and leaving the shop if it were me, (thinking about your next optician) hope it all goes well for you in your next optician Martin.

Been to new opticians today and had another eye test She said I have a slight astigmatism in the left eye and has put that into the new prescription She picked up on the curve of my old glasses too which may be what was missed out last time ?
So going to have some new lens made and go from there, sheesh....

Well you will all be pleased to know my glasses are sorted ! Turns out it is the curve on the lens ! The new opticians cut the new lens to the curve of my old ones The ones I took back were very flat and would distort the more you looked around the edges The old opticians told me to ring him if I got it sorted
