You are missing nothing that's how they were. You can seal the joint with a smear of silicon or use a thin Viton o-ring that will fit in the groove. The o-ring needs to be about 3-5mm smaller so you have to stretch it to fit in.

I have Microns on my YPVS and have managed to get them to seal. Firstly get yourself a set of copper gaskets, those fibre ones crush into weird shapes. Secondly get some high temperature sealant, something like this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134098202666?epid=652780756&hash=item1f38e0302a:g:XQAAAOSw2gFiZ9XETo install the pipes I put plenty of sealant on both sides of the copper gasket and stick it to the barrel, then finger tighten the exhaust flange to hold it in place. Then I slide on the pipe and align it correctly at the back, and tighten up the flange nuts. I then remove the pipe and put more sealant on the flange stub, slide the pipe back on and tighten the rear nut and bolt. smooth any excess sealant around the join. Fit the springs and then leave it for at least 24 hours to let it cure. It's a bit of a rigmarole but it works for me.
