just finished a rd250lc engine build , new genuine Yamaha gear selector and seals etc etc , everything ran free and engaged gears etc before bolting up.... took for it's first spin and noticed even in gear the foot gear selector is very sloppy to the fact it has a lot of play before it will engage gear. i have removed the clutch case but not the basket just to look at the part of of shaft that engages with the star and even if i move it manually into gear it remains very sloppy like something is missing .... it should have some resistance even in gear this has NO feedback to let you know ? any help on this would be greatly appreciated ZiG

You did take the spring and plastic spacer off the old shaft and fit to the new one?

Is the detent arm and spring ok? Also how are the ball joints on the gear lever and arm Steve Hi Steve because i have not pulled the clutch basket yet i did have a go at moving it gently with a flat screw driver and seems ok....the gear lever ball joints are acceptable but i removed this and you can still move the selector shaft quite a bit with your fingers

If it's sloppy its most likely the return/venturing mechanism or the detent arm/star

If it's sloppy its most likely the return/venturing mechanism or the detent arm/star Steve i think you are correct again Steve on this , it has to be thinking about it......even though it is the way it is would it still be an issue selecting gears while spinning the rear wheel ? ZiG

If it's sloppy its most likely the return/venturing mechanism or the detent arm/star Steve As above said, i would of thought its the springs probably not located properly. Mark.

So removed the clutch basket this morning for a better inspection and found i had not located the return spring properly....thanks Steve don't know how that got past me but there you are , luckily i had ordered a few clutch case gaskets from '4l04ever' during the week which helped me pop everything back together without fault thanks everyone for the feedback now i can enjoy this bike ZiG
