I’ve been running my new to me 350lc for a few days now and thought it time to top up the oils toped up the engine/gearbox oil with silkolene light gearbox oil.knowing exactly that’s what the previous owner used.
he also gave me two bottles of Motul 710 and when I went to top the running oil reservoir to feed the oil pump I could see it was a red coloured oil. the new bottles of Motul 710 are more of a green colour can I add to the tank to top up.
Am i right in thinking different brands use different colouring and it’s ok to mix. thank for help

Cant be 100% sure what the previous owner put in, but id guess youll be ok. If your in any doubt, maybe flush the system and then start from there.

As far as I know Molul 710 has always been green, so it must have something else in the tank. I would also second flushing the system out and starting a fresh with 710.
When I got my bike I did the same and found all kinds of old crud in the bottom of the tank.

These bikes are old now, any debris in the system can end up in the check valves in the oil pump, causing the usual issues. Just a thought, Motul 510 was red, did he mean this? No problem mixing.

That’s very helpful everyone. asking around on other forums. Not as good as this one obviously
people are telling me it would be fine to pour in with out draining
as long as I’m 100% sure it is a well maintained bike by it’s previous owner.. Which it is.
im not being lazy about draining the tank It’s just I have never done this before on a bike and just don’t know where to start but I’m paranoid if I do it wrong there will be a Big Bang
in my very distant memory of riding LCs I just recall adding good but probably different brands as and when I needed it. never empty between the brands

Not being funny, but if you can tension a chain (for example) you can drain an oil tank.
However, once there are debris on the valve seats they are most unlikely to come off with any continued running. A full strip down of the pump is required to do the job properly.

I guess I was worried if I drain and refill I might somehow get a air lock in the pump once refilled

There is a bleed screw on the pump, for such purposes. The outlet pipes can stay in situ and then they won't need to be bled. 👍

I guess I could keep it to burn in the winter months to keep warm
As all spare cash and probably part of the future housekeeping money has been spent on the new bike..Whoops 🤭

Motul 800 is red in colour, it's a premix oil, however it could be any brand really
To be safe just drain the old oil out and flush the lines, lets face it you're only chucking away 2 or so litres, so not a big waste and you've piece of mind knowing the oil is new clean and not mixed with something it maybe shouldn't be mixed with

Tho in reality the 'Haynes Book of Lies' is always worth having (do search on here for the mistakes in it tho and note them in the book)
