Had the opportunity to investigate the age old backlash situation yesterday. The engine I'm currently building is a Brazilian with backlash of 156, runs smooth and easy, no tight spots or discernible play (with engine built up but no cylinders on). Then I put on a brand new basket, backlash was now 158 and it was impossible to tell any difference from the 156.

generally backlash numbers between 150 to 160 tends to be fine, below 150 it starts getting very sloppy/noisy, above 160 things do start to get tight when turning over by hand, even tighter when the engine is running hot as things expand

Cheers Dave. I got to thinking that probably 150 to 160 would likely be perfectly fine so it's interesting that you've discovered just that 👍🏻
