With all the experience on this site, I thought I might ask if anyone has tried any decent modular helmets. I have tried a Shark GT as I liked the fact that the chin guard flips right to the back of the helmet. However, it's a considerable weight and in order to get chin guard to flip to the back, I think it's extra large looking. So tomorrow I am going out looking at other helmets and whilst I had been looking at trying a Schuberth C5 or a Shoei Neotec 2, I think they may also be on the heavy side. If the fit of them is better, it might make the weight less noticeable but I have read today the AGV's are a lot lighter construction being carbon fiber. They also have double D fastening rather than a ratchet lock, I like the D rings better. I've been watching a few reviews and funnily enough, things I noticed myself are recognised problems. For example, the chinstrap on modular helmets can be further back and catch your neck (as the Shark does a little). Schuberth have tried to address this with the C5 by putting it as far forward as possible and added a couple of extra straps to prevent it slipping off your chin. They have also made it adjustable inside by offering extra pads like shoei although these are at cost. The C5 has a better crack position over the Shoei so you can have a little bit of air pass under the visor.
There are pros and cons for them all but I thought I might ask if anyone had any thoughts on modulars they had liked, preferably the more modern ones as they get better all the time.

I had a Shoei flip lid, an older model, when it eventually wore our I bought a new so called improved model
I wore it on the ride home and I had a very annoying whistle coming from the lid, never had that before
So I took it back to the shop who said they would get Shoie to look at
Long story short, I got a call to say my new helmet was ready for pick up
It was the same one as I had left with them, nothing wrong with it I was told
Not happy at all, got a refund and bought a normal type lid
So from my experience with the new neotech I’d leave them well alone

Just thought to update this, kind of felt a bit bad in view of the experience above but after trying a couple of helmets on and reading problems experienced with some like the AGV build quality and the fact it can feel close on the chin, it did come down to my main two, the Neotec or the C5. I finally settled Shoei, it just felt right, comfortable like my current AGV. The only thing I noticed was the weight but having ridden with it a few times, I forget I have it on. It has the internal sliding tinted screen but I purchased the road legal tinted visor. Really pleased with it. Fortunately, I have not experienced any noise but it would have gone back if there was. Here's the tinted visor alongside the standard, it's just right and appears darker when in use viewed from outside. It might help someone looking because it takes time to sort through them. You have to consider some only come in two shell sizes and the padding makes the difference between large and extra large so you end up with a heavier and larger shell than needed if you only need large.
