Not technically relevant info on a bike forum, but spotted a spitfire over Rochester airport at 13:45 on 02/05/2022.
Nice to see. Not sure how many are air worthy these days, but I do know one was restored up the road some time ago.

Get them near us as we have sywell aerodrome not far. I always stop and just watch. A merlin engine is guaranteed to bring a tear to my eye.

Oh...the plane! Stunning things. Seen a few flying when I was a kid at airshows and the noise...breath taking and unforgettable.

I was at Perth Aerodrome when there was a small display there in the mid 80's and there was a red Spitfire parked up in front of the crowd barrier with a lot of folk looking on as a chap in a flying jacket and helmet strolled round and climbed in.. preflight checks completed, he hit the start button and the noise was incredible when it caught.. the breeze from the prop cleared everyone away from the back of the plane as fast as..

Saw another just now over Rochester airport. Was different though, it had battle of Briton stripe on the under wings.

BofB stripe? Do you mean the v early white and black demarcation? Or do you mean the black and white stripes? If so they were used for the Normandy invasion for id purposes. There was an earlier version for the dieppe raid. Had a hurricane from sywell over earlier. 👍

veg yes that’s the one, the markings of the Normandy invasion. The old grey cells aren’t what they used to be. Jon

I live in Biggin Hill and we’re lucky to see up to a dozen every day. Less so during the winter months. They’re mainly 2 seaters built by the Heritage centre up on the airfield. Occasionally Hurricane's too. Last week there was a Mustang and Spitfire performing aerobatics for some tv show?

I have a sneaking suspicion that they used the Spitfire engine noise for a lot of the Star Wars spacecraft.

Not WWII but we were in our living room the other night and the place started drumming as if a couple of tanks were driving past outside. It felt like it was coming from the air so I looked on Flight Radar and it was two Hercules transporters at about 2000ft going directly overhead and heading up towards York.

I saw a lot of aeroplanes when I was in the Air Cadets in the 70's but like most young lads I never fully appreciated it. We had a visit in 1978 to Bimbrook the Lightening base in Lincolnshire. We got to see the c**kpits close up and watched some take off from pretty close. Then just got off the ground then went near vertical. Still one of my favourite planes.
We got some very good views at some air displays but one of the best experiences was the Lancaster at Woodhall Spa for the 40's weekend a few years ago. It flew so low you could see the crews faces and repeated the fly past maybe three or four times. Awesome sight and sound.

When I was in the Army, I was duty snco and had to open up the hangar, first thing Monday morning. I had locked up Friday night, so wasn't expecting to see a Messerscmit 109 parked in the middle of the hangar on jacks. It turned out that the boss, had given permission for it to live there, until post refurb checks could be carried. He didn't think about how we would get our helicopters out. Watching it take off from the airfield was amazing. Few weeks later, same thing happened but it was a Spitfire, which was amazing. Both planes were owned by Steve Wosniak (I think)

I’ve had the opposite to this. Heard an feint aeroplane engine noise from above, and looked up to see an AWAC at very low altitude glide past. Jon
