I'm embarking on something different in league with my mate Dave, seeing if it's possible to put a 350 YPVS engine in an MT125. It's all Yamaha but maybe not suitable for this forum? Happy to document it here, but is it the sort of thing you people would want to see?

OK. So it goes like this:
Both Dave and I have spent much of our biking lives around 2 strokes, we've both ridden, repaired, restored and built them from standard to not so standard. I did a YPVS/VJ22 hybrid a few years ago which was probably my favourite ever bike build, it went well, handled really well and looked fabulous. We got talking a few weeks ago about the whole 2 stroke situation and how we'd like to do something different, hybrids allow you to make something out of better parts by combining good things from a mix of machines, but they were never designed to be complete bikes so compromises always have to be made. This led us to think about taking a complete modern day chassis which would be a good handling bike and give it some extra whoosh with a 2 stroke powerplant. After looking at various things, and considering that both of us are too old to sit on a sportsbike chassis for much more than 10 minutes, the MT125 looked like a good place to be. It's a sizeable bike for a 125, its got a beefy swingarm, upside down forks and 17 inch wheels so a good choice of tyre fitments. A plan was hatched and two weeks ago, we picked up a 4 year old MT in nice condition for reasonable money and here she sits awaiting her transplant......

So now we needed to find an engine, not an easy task without spending more than we've got in the complete MT on one and although for me, bikes have never been about the money, we have neither a magic money tree to pluck from nor a bottomless pit of coins to dig. Both Dave and I know some good people through the RD scene so feelers were put out and long story short, we came home this weekend with a Volvo full of F1......

Great to see something a bit different My mates son had an Mt125, I I did think a Pv engine would fit quite nicely. Will make a nice special/hybrid for sure Dusty

The initial plan was to take what we needed from the F1 and sell the rest on, but the bike is so incredibly original it just seems wrong not to fix her up at some point, not a restoration, but just as an honest running and riding 37 year old bike with her age fully on view, no botox, no fillers, no fakery, but that will have to wait. The bonus was we managed to get a spare set of YPVS cases in with the deal so these have been assembled with cylinders, head, thermo housing and just the output shaft inside so we can see if it fits in the space available and that we can get the sprockets aligned. Watch this space......

I will be watching this hybrid build π It is also nice to see another F1 getting saved. I am going to do the same with mine just get it running and leave it how the previous owner had it. I look forward to see a build thead π

Love it. This chassis and the KTM Dukes, seem like a great idea for a PV motor.

Pulled up a chair. Looking forward to seeing progress on this one.
I thought about doing this. Was told the frame was very narrow so engine wouldnβt fit.
Seems it does π³π
Canβt wait to see more progress π

Very very interesting. Power to weight ration will be brilliant. How will you get it registered ? Are there any emissions issues to sort for the MOT?

MT is already registered, just need to change the CC and engine number with DVLA. There's currently no emissions tests on motorcycles.

Result. I bet most of the bike mags will want a spread on it.

So today we struck lucky, an honourable chap who's part of Dave's far reaching RD circle of friends donated a 250LC tie bar frame which will give up its engine cradle section for the MT350. Gonna be a busy day tomorrow, but hopefully by the end of it, we'll have a clear direction of the next stage for the engine mounting.

I assume that emission tests are done on new designs of bikes, as opposed to the actual bike?

Well, the RD frame has been giving up some of its wares, the bottom cradle was removed and is now fitted into the MT frame and is roughly lined up with where it will fit. Brackets have been fabricated for it to mate with the rear bottom mounts on the frame and the RD this afternoon further contributed two rails from the rear subframe which will form the top front mount. This will then fully tie the top of the cradle to the MT frame. Once that's all in place, the cradle will come out for final welding, hopefully that will happen on Wednesday. If that all goes to plan, we then need to solve the conundrum of radiator placement. It looks like we might struggle to find the room for one in the usual place, but if not, we have a cunning plan for two side mounted rads. With luck, by the end of next weekend, all that will be well on the way to being resolved π€π» I'll get some photos posted up soon.

Rear sub-frame rails from the RD which will be used for the front top support for the engine cradle

Make sure you fit a radiator before you finalise your engine cradle, as it looks close to the front wheel. Keep up the great work! :-)

Keep up the great work! :-) Hi Rob, It's not looking too likely that a radiator is going to fit in the usual place unless it's some kind of ultra thin design, but if not, we have an alternative plan to go with a pair of side mounted ones in kind of a KTM or VTR1000 fashion........
