i have restored an rd400e bt looking at the numbers on the engine and frame, these are close to the f model. could i be correct in thinking mine could have been one of the last to be produced before the f model came out, or do i have a rd400f
engine number 1A3-331145 Frame number 1A3-331145.
i can see the F model started at 1979.. 1A3-330101 F model

Can’t follow your logic about potentially last E before F came out … it’s clearly a higher number than the start of the F range…. yours is an early F, 1045th uk/eu spec F off the production line…
Es all start 1A3-11

yep, its an F, as Pete has stated, all E's are 1A3-11xxxx
All F's are 1A3-33xxxx (UK models that is)

Well by ‘wrong’ means not dodgey but with an extra 0 where the dash is, or no 1A3, just the frame sequence etc. although it’s a bit of inconvenience, and possibly you restored a few things as ‘e’ not ‘f’, in the long run thevF is the slightly more desirable of the two…. Seen as the last and a nod to what followed…dog leg levers a la 350LC !

I have an RD400 with four numbers on the V5! It's the same four numbers that are on the frame and engine... they didn't bother putting any of the letters or zeros on the reg doc in the 1st place. Must of been a newbie in the dealers at the time.

Must of been a newbie in the dealers at the time. Yep, seen that before too , as the 400C starts 00, and pre computer age , if someone asked you what number 00xxxx was, you’d just say xxxx. And the 1A3 ‘everyone knew’ was the model RD400…. Which was written down anyway elsewhere because it says yamaha 400 on the V5…so no need for the 1A3 or the 00s…. Most of my 521 350Bs were like that .. as they also started with 00. then they transferred all data from hand written records to DVLA …..and all that analogue info gets a digital ‘bake in’ …

I am a tad sensitive to having the numbers match the log book, so tomorrow I will get the angle grinder out and dispose of the 1A3 and the zeros on the cases and frame. This should make it a better prospect in the sales dept, as it will truly "match" the V5.

Good idea !😂 Slightly more seriously, FYI, I wrote to DVLA , photos of frame and engine, confirmed that all vIn numbers if that era were 9 digit, and coded . Referenced others I own and the v5 was updated.
