Anyone else been shocked by some sudden price hikes?
I started work on a house last week and this morning went to my local hardware shop for the usual supplies.
Paint...two weeks ago was £23 now £30.
Silicon sealer...was £1.99 now £4.99.
Masking tape, filler, plaster etc all huge price hikes. The lass who runs the place (known her for 35 years) is a lovely person and was so apologetic but she says each cargo container coming here now cost an added £18k!! Is this true?

I'm not surprised i work in the service industry for ships. 30% of the service engineers in my company has covid, so they all have to stay home. This sort of thing is causing lots of problems for some boats that are delayed due to breakdowns.

I’ve not noticed any price hikes recently, but certainly post covid. I can’t believe the price increase in wood (it’s not like i grows on trees ).But seriously it has increased in price considerably. I’ve used Wickes a lot in the past so I wanted to match up some skirting board. I wanted 2.4m lengths. I seem to remember a pack of 4 was £20 odd. Saw the label at £15.80 and thought that’s a good price. No, that was for 1 board. Jon

Better get used to it, it's going to be the new normal..... Making rich people richer.... and richer.... and boy have some made a £££ during the clusterfook (not just Halfrauds bikes) Only ones who will be put under pressure with rising energy prices ect are the usual ones.... and them tory clowns, both blue and red parties... (or should that be parties with balloons and cake and champers) don't care. But they can write off £8.7bn in an instant....how many people would that of helped?

Alex Yes, we normally pay 5-6K usd to bring a 40’ from Asia, since last year price pretty much added 20k on top… I should imagine the paint price is related to oil price, silicone hike and other sundries are most probably due to shipping and general shortage in the supply chain.

If you read jack monroe’s article on real world food prices it’ll shock you. Past couple of years all building supplies have sky rocketed, my builder reckons combination of factors but primarily demand and brexit but it’s ok Alex as we have sun light uplands around the corner 👍

I think a lot is rip off merchants too taking advantage of it being "expected"
Up here the new smoke alarm laws came in yesterday
Was watching a local supplier who was on eBay and the detectors were £28 each with 2 weeks to the rule change
Week to go they jump to £31, then £35 a couple of days later
No supply issues as they are readily available.
Bought them from down south for £24 each with free post

We buy a lot of ABB hazardous area motors from the UK distributor. These are made in Finland. Prices have gone up by about 40%. Delivery used to be 3/4 days for small common size ones but now everything is production meaning made to order and can be 26weeks, yep six months, for some larger motors. I get an email most days from suppliers advising of price 'adjustments.' I joke and ask "are they going down?" It's just like the 1970's again, 10% inflation (but no Gary Glitter) 😃

Just before covid, we were looking at a vehicle to replace my wife's ageing car. Went back to the garage later in the year to see the same vehicle....... £2k dearer. Secondhand van prices went in the same direction... and houses.... madness. Reap the whirlwind.

Don’t get me started… I own a printing company and we have paper increases twice a month. This will give you an idea of the challenges ahead, I quoted a job last week that was invoiced for £17,500 in June 2020, my revised price is £26,000!! All down to the increase cost of paper which is mostly down to Brexit. We no longer make anything in this country and our European friends know this and have decided to charge a premium to the UK. And the bad news is that they project this will continue into the summer. I thought Covid was brutal for business, trust me this is worse. I do believe this country is on a knife edge, apologies for the rant.. www.raging.com

yep, anything coming in from Europe has gone up, shipping costs have sky rocketed, and its mainly our European friends doing it, I've started to source the same parts via a different route/country, somethings I can't avoid as they are made in Europe, so I get hit no matter what
Shipping a while back for 20 units of an item I buy was £40, so basically £2 an item, now I am being quoted £120, so thats another £6 per item, it starts to add up
I am going to reduce my stock holdings as its getting silly, but then, you have to wait months and months for parts, so I've been ordering as much as I can when its available so I don't run out, but its a fine line, and cash flow is an issue
COVID has caused some major issues though, I've had loads of carbs on back order for over a year now and still no sight of them appearing anytime soon, ion fact that's what I am doing at the moment, trying to find a supplier who has stock of some I am in depserate need of, even searching worldwide isn't yielding much at the moment, so its not just a UK issue that's for sure

My local pie shop is short of foil pie dishes and will run out shortly if they cant find a source quick. This pales the supply problems and price hikes mentioned above into insignificance..... People are going to starve as the pie is the most important part of the diet around here.... imagine... just pea wet and chips wi'out a pie, I think I'll panic buy whats left in the pie shop tomorrow. If I'd known that Brexit was going to cripple the supply of pie dishes, I would of voted remain...ah well..you live and learn.
