I'm in the middle of a TZ/RD400 project I'm at the stage where I'm mocking everything up so am looking for some options for pipes. I've already talked to Jim at Alonze but he doesn't do 400 pipes today. I also assume Dave does not do them either, but he doesn't ship to Canada so that's a problem. I'm not keen on the Allspeeds as they don't match the overall look of the bike (and Gibsons also will not ship to Canada), and I don't like the JL pipes as they are very long and apparently they lose a lot in the mid range. Any ideas or recommendations? I need to get the pipes mocked up to get the frame finished as I think the side stand mount will have to be moved outside onto the frame rail. There will be no center stand. I do have a set of DG's (The ones for the YPVS motor) that I got in a pile of stuff i bought a long time ago. These may fit with a bit of bodging. I would have to cut the down pipe off and rotate it as the RD ports exit pointing towards the center of the bike, and I would chop those cans off and put on a short stinger that follows the lines of the pipes and some better cans on them. I don't think they were a great pipe to begin with, even on the YPVS so I have no idea how they would work on a 400. I think I may use them only as a last resort

From a performance perspective, I seem to recall that standard LC pipes work well on tuned air cooled bikes and fit with a bit of filing

I agree that the Tz look wouldn't fit well with Allspeeds - you ideally want an exhaust that looks more of a race pipe with removable ali/carbon end cans. Look at Sidney81's (Chris) Rd250 build in the resto section. He got his pipes in kit form from a well known pipe builder in the Uk, and Chris then welded them together to suit the lines of the bike - they look fantastic, and something like them would suit your build really well, I think And yep, anything too long just wont look right. Those are nice pipes. The tuck in nice and tight as well.
Shipping as a kit would be so much better. I’ll reach out
Thanks All
