So here is my very slow burner project.
I spotted this NSR250 MC21 rolling chassis on Facebook market place in August 21 I think it was.
Some may recognise it from the 'project hunter' pages of PS. I had already bought it when the mag came out.
It initially caught my attention as I love the Honda opposed spoke design wheels, and this was wearing a 17" rear. I already had a cbr600 17x4.5 rear wheel that I was trying to shoe horn into any swingarm that would take it, to probably go on an F2 I was working on. But it was a struggle as the cbr wheel has a large diameter and wide hub.
So I drove the 20 or so miles over the 'border' in to N Yorks (from N Lancs) on a Saturday when the wife happened to be away for the weekend with the girls, and had a look at it. It had arrived at the current owner with a KX500 in it. He had sold that on already. The frame had been butchered to take the KX mill, and some dodgy, heavy alloy mig welding holding a couple of not square brackets to take a KX cradle. I thought I'd keep the wheels and swingarm and sell the rest on. I should be able to get my money back. So we chucked it on the trailer.
It had no reg, no V5, just a frame number. So that night after a few beers, I wondered whether I could get a V5 for it. There's a seller on ebay who can find a reg from a vin and vice versa. So I messaged him the frame number, he replied on Sunday morning to say he had found the vehicle details, so I paid his buyitnow price, ยฃ7 i think, and he sent me a screenshot of a Honda car dealers computer screen, which contained all the vehicle details reg, frame no, eng no, colour, date of reg etc.
I had a reg.
I filled in the V62 form and sent ยฃ20 to DVLA.
4 Weeks later I received a log book.
Right then, now the frame has a value as a project but not as a NSR frame, what now?
So it looks like it should go in. The rad won't fit anymore, that's another headache for another day.
I didn't have a moral problem in irreversibly modifying the frame as it had already been modified and hacked about. Which made the decision making much easier.
The NSR engine is a v twin and the drop down rails that pick up the engine mount had been cut off to stubs.
How they should be....
How mine were.....
It looked like these were welded in to sockets at the headstock. So I went about un picking the welds to relieve the stubs from their sockets.
The slot mark is in the weld and won't be visible when dressed.
The plan is to create a detachable cradle to carry the frontย mount. The rear is a far more simple affair with a couple of angle brackets picking up a flat bottomed cross member above the swingarm pivot. I saw a picture of a KR1S that billydafish was selling that was modded to take ypvs motor. I was tempted to buy it as the cradle had been done, neatly too, and move my chassis on, but he was the thick end of 300 miles away if I remember correctly.
I think the Nsr looks better too, and is more complete.
